Tottenham's Alderweireld: Contract saga will not affect performances

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has said his performances show his contract situation will not affect his form.

Spurs last week took up an option to extend Alderweireld's stay from the summer of 2019 to 2020, ensuring they will not lose him for free this year.

In doing so they have also activated a release clause making him available for £25 million this summer. But, having helped Spurs to keep a clean sheet in Tuesday's 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea, Alderweireld said speculation about his future will not affect his displays.

"I'm very happy to stay another year," he said. "That [option] was in my contract. I'm happy that Spurs give me the confidence to stay another year.

"I only focus on the things on the pitch. I think people can see that every time I play I give 100 per cent for the club, so that's what I'll keep doing every game that I play. "This is my fourth season here. I'm very happy. I do everything on the pitch to help the team."

Sources have told ESPN FC that Tottenham are increasingly resigned to losing Alderweireld, either this summer or thereafter, as his representatives are reluctant to discuss a new contract.
