Chicago beats Columbus in USOC penalty thriller; Red Bulls bounce NYCFC

The Chicago Fire won a penalty-shootout thriller against the Columbus Crew SC to advance from the round of 32 in the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, after the match ended 2-2.

First-half goals from the Crew's Christian Martinez and the Fire's Nemanja Nikolic saw the teams go into half-time tied 1-1 and neither team scored in the second half, sending the match to extra time.

Nikolic added his second in extra time, but Columbus' Adam Jahn countered to force the game to be decided from the penalty spot.

It took 11 kicks from each team to send the Fire through to the next round after the Crew's Logan Ketterer missed to end the match to hand Chicago a 10-9 shootout win.

The 22 penalties tied a record for a game involving an MLS team, matching Portland's win over Sporting Kansas City in the 2015 MLS playoffs, and the 19 converted spot kicks equaled a record from the 2001 U.S. Open Cup.

The New York Red Bulls made short work of crosstown rivals New York City FC, beating them 4-0 to eliminate them from the Open and reach the round of 16.

Vincent Bezecourt had the hosts in front in the second minute at Red Bull Arena and Aaron Long doubled the lead soon after the break.

Daniel Royer scored twice late in the second half to flatter the Red Bulls on the final scoreline, marking the second time this season that Jesse Marsch's team has beaten NYCFC 4-0, following a May 5 with in MLS.

Minnesota United needed penalties after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time ended 0-0 to beat FC Cincinnati, last year's cup darlings and the newest team to be granted a MLS expansion team, 3-1 on penalties.

The struggling Colorado Rapids lost 2-0 to another future MLS club in Nashville SC of the USL.

Nashville later learned in Thursday morning's draw that they will face fellow USL club Louisville City, who beat New England on Tuesday night, in the round of 16 later this month.

There was also an upset at Bonney Field in Sacramento, where Jure Matjasic's extra-time strike helped the Sacramento Republic defeat the Seattle Sounders 2-1, after the MLS club needed Harry Shipp's stoppage-time goal just to force an extra 30 minutes.

In the other matchups between MLS clubs, Johnny Russell and Kharlton Belmar helped Sporting Kansas City to a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake, while the Portland Timbers eased past the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 with goals from Jeremy Ebobisse and Dairon Asprilla.

In Wednesday's other matches, Atlanta United ran out 3-0 winners against the Charleston Battery, with 17-year-old Andrew Carleton, Ezequiel Barco and Romario Williams providing the scoring.

Orlando City beat Miami United by the same scoreline with goals from Stefano Pinho, Dillon Powers and Victor Giro to eliminate the National Premier Soccer League side.

The Houston Dynamo thrashed amateur side NTX Rayados 5-0, FC Dallas edged San Antonio FC 1-0 in a battle of Texas clubs.

And in Southern California, LAFC defeated Fresno FC 2-0 while the LA Galaxy got the better of amateurs Golden State Force 3-1.
