Ex-U.S. star Heather O'Reilly heads six new female signings to Common Goal

Former United States international and Arsenal's three-time Olympic champion Heather O'Reilly is among six female players from five countries to sign up for Juan Mata's Common Goal campaign, the charity has announced.

O'Reilly, who retired from the international game last year after 231 appearances for the U.S., has pledged to give at least one percent of her salary to football-related good causes.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who also picked up a World Cup winners' medal in 2015, joined Women's Super League (WSL) club Arsenal in January.

Last month, her former U.S. teammates Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe became the first female players to commit to Mata's project, but Monday's raft of new signings brings the total number involved -- male and female -- to 18.

Charlie Daniels of Bournemouth and Swansea's Alfie Mawson became the second and third Premier League players after Manchester United midfielder Mata to join last week.

Manchester City's German midfielder Pauline Bremer brings the total from the WSL to two, while Uganda's Jean Sseninde plays for Crystal Palace in the Women's Premier League South.

Former Spain captain Vero Boquete, compatriot Olga Garcia and Colombia's Nicole Regnier were the three other women to commit to Common Goal on Monday, joining players including Germany's Mats Hummels and Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Daniels and Mawson were the first two English players to sign up to the initiative, and the former has revealed colleagues past and present have already shown an interest in possibly joining too.

"I've spoken with a couple so far," Daniels told Press Association Sport.

"I'd like to think that many more players will follow suit. But a lot of people have different charities that they choose to support and I'm all for that. It's really down to personal preference.

"I've played through all the leagues, I've seen every side of the football spectrum and it's a nice thing to do to give back.

"It doesn't impact on my footballing aspect as well which obviously helps, and it's something I'm very proud to be a part of and something I'm looking forward to delving into a bit more as the season goes on."
