Whitecaps defender Sheanon Williams has assault charge stayed

Sheanon Williams' assault charge will not be pursed by prosecution in British Columbia, though the Vancouver Whitecaps defender still faces discipline from Major League Soccer.

Williams, 27, was arrested on Thursday after an alleged domestic incident. He entered MLS's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program and will be suspended until his SABH assessment is concluded.

Though the legal case has been stayed, the B.C. Prosecution Service will have one year to re-file charges.

"Further information was received after a charge was approved that lead to the conclusion that the charge assessment standard was no longer met," a prosecution spokesperson told the Canadian Press. "As a consequence the charge has been stayed."

MLS said it would continue its own investigation into the incident.

The Boston native and former North Carolina star has played 14 matches over all competitions this season for the Whitecaps, providing one assist.
