Applewhite scores 24 to lift SC State past CSU 79-75

BALTIMORE -- Damani Applewhite scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and South Carolina State came from behind to beat Coppin State 79-75 in Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Trailing 37-30 at halftime, the Bulldogs overtook the Eagles for good 75-73 on Zacchaeus Sellers' layup with 26 seconds left before scoring four unanswered points.

Ian Kinard scored 19 points with seven boards and Sellers added 12 points with five assists for the Bulldogs (6-7).

Koby Thomas scored a career-high 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including five dunks, and made six steals for Coppin State (4-12), which has lost six straight. Andrew Robinson scored 19 points and Dejuan Clayton and Kamar McKnight added 10 apiece with McKnight making six assists.

South Carolina State takes on Morgan State on the road on Monday. Coppin State faces Norfolk State at home on Monday.
