South Dakota lets Joey James go

Men's College Basketball, South Dakota Coyotes

South Dakota has decided not to retain interim coach Joey James, the school announced Tuesday.

"As we stated in October, the men's basketball coaching position at the University of South Dakota is one that merits a national search," said USD athletic director David Herbster. "We committed to conducting a search process then, and we are following through with that commitment now."

James replaced longtime Coyotes coach Dave Boots in early September after Boots -- who had won more than 500 games with the program -- abruptly retired. Boots achieved most of his success while South Dakota was in Division II.

James played for the school in the late 1990s and has been an assistant for the Coyotes for the past decade.

South Dakota finished 12-18 this season and was 6-8 in the Summit League. The Coyotes lost to Denver in the Summit quarterfinals.
