Rockies give Leyland best going-away present

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Rockies gave Jim Leyland a nice going-away present Sunday: a two-run rally in the ninth inning for a 9-8 victory over San Francisco in his final game as manager.

A disappointing season for Leyland ended on a positive note when Edgard Clemente hit a sacrifice fly with one out.

The Rockies avoided a three-game sweep at Coors Field and finished 72-90 in their only season under Leyland.

"I wanted that game real bad," Leyland said. "I'm not going to lie about it."

Leyland, who signed a three-year $6 million contract to manage the Rockies on Oct. 5, 1998, put an end to an 14-year managerial career. He posted a 1,068-1,129 record in stops at Pittsburgh, Florida and Colorado, and won the 1997 World Series with the Marlins.

With one out in the ninth, Alan Embree (3-2) walked Terry Shumpert, hit Todd Helton with a pitch and gave up Dante Bichette's tying single. Bichette also homered and doubled, driving in three runs to reach 1,002 career RBIs.

Embree intentionally walked Vinny Castilla and Bronswell Patrick relieved. Clemente followed with his sacrifice fly to right field.

"I'm sad for us to lose this game, but you've got to be happy for him to win his last game, so it's a double-edged sword of emotion," Giants manager Dusty Baker said.

Calvin Murray broke a 7-7 tie with a two-out, RBI single in the Giants eighth.

Dave Veres (4-8) pitched a scoreless ninth for Colorado.

Marvin Benard went 2-for-2 and added an RBI for the Giants. He had five hits Saturday.

Joe Nathan worked the first five innings for the Giants, giving up five runs and six hits. The Giants went 4-11 in their last 15 games.

Kirt Manwaring homered and drove in three runs for the Rockies. He tied it at 7 with a two-run homer in the sixth.

The Giants had held leads of 2-0, 4-2, 5-2 and 7-4 before Manwaring's homer.

Game notes
The Rockies named Josh Byrnes assistant general manager. ... San Francisco OF Ellis Burks was a late scratch due soreness in his knees. ... The Giants have not won a season finale under Dusty Baker since the strike-shortened 1994 season.
