BOX SCORE
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Phil Nevin homered to lead a 14-hit attack and the San Diego Padres routed the Seattle Mariners 10-5 Thursday in the teams' opening exhibition game of the spring. Matt Clement, who finished second among NL rookies in ERA and third in wins last season, pitched two strong innings for the win, allowing only Carlos Guillen's single. He struck out three. ``It looks like he's pitching with so much confidence like he did in the second half,'' Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. ``We're going to rely on our starters. They need to come through for us.'' The Padres, whose lineup included newcomers Ryan Klesko and Bret Boone, pounded a staff that has been touted as one of the deepest in Seattle history. John Halama, expected to battle Gil Meche for the fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation, started and pitched one shaky inning. He gave up three runs and four hits, including Nevin's 400-foot homer. ``Johnny is more of a finesse pitcher,'' Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. ``Until he starts hitting his spots things will be a little more difficult. He's not going to overpower you so he has to change speeds and hit his spots.'' The game was played for charity and does not count in the spring training standings.
