PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - It took Mo Vaughn until his 57th at bat of last spring to hit a home run. This year, he hit one on the first pitch he saw. Vaughn homered 400 feet plus on a pitch from Jamie Moyer, Seattle's No. 1 starter, as the Anaheim Angels defeated the Mariners 8-5 on Friday. ``Overall, it's good to drive the baseball from the start,'' Vaughn said. Vaughn a double by Jim Edmonds double with his homer in the first, giving the Angels a 2-0 lead that would become 4-0 by the end of the inning. ``Mo can hit,'' new Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``If he didn't hit a home run this spring or if he hit 40 home runs this spring, he can hit. I'm not concerned about that.'' Two innings later, Anaheim's Tim Salmon homered to center off Ken Cloude. ``That was a monster shot,'' Scioscia said of Salmon's homer that put Anaheim up 6-2. Jay Buhner and Shane Monahan also homered for Seattle, which got a two-run single from Dan Wilson. Moyer pitched two innings, giving up the four first-inning runs and retiring the side in order in the second on nine pitches. ``I found the plate, but I found the middle of it,'' Moyer said of his first-inning performance. Notes:@ Carlos Guillen of the Mariners, who is trying to play third base for the first time, made a few solid defensive plays in the first two innings. ... Scioscia was pleased with the performances of pitchers Matt Wise and Shigetoshi Hasegawa. ``He really made some good pitches and moved the ball around well,'' Scioscia said of Wise, adding that Hasegawa was ``right on the money.''
