RECAP
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ There were five homers hit during the game, three by the Atlanta Braves. But only one was memorable, mainly because Juan Gonzalez hit it. Gonzalez hit his first homer in a Detroit uniform, a tremendous two-run shot, yet the Braves came back from a four-run deficit to beat the Tigers 10-7 Tuesday. ``He just looks menacing at the plate, doesn't he?'' new Tigers manager Phil Garner said. Gonzalez, who continues to ponder the Tigers' $140 million contract offer, has been nursing a strained left hamstring. As a result, he has been used only as a designated hitter this spring, and only at Joker Marchant Stadium. Gonzalez won't be subjected to any bus rides any time soon. ``I want to see him get to where he wants to be, which is swinging the bat,'' Garner said. ``He doesn't need to make road trips in spring training.'' Gonzalez and Karim Garcia both homered in a four-run first off Terry Mulholland, making his first appearance of the spring. ``I think he got a hanging fastball,'' Garner said. ``He got all over that one. There was a crosswind, but it didn't make any difference. When he hits them, it's going to go out.'' Matt Belisle, the Braves No. 2 selection in the 1998 amateur draft, pitched two scoreless innings in his first appearance of the spring. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two for the win. Paul Assenmacher, trying for his second tour of duty with the Braves, was tagged for two runs and four hits in one inning. Assenmacher, who signed a minor league contract Feb. 4, also threw a wild pitch. Free agent Hideo Nomo started and gave up three runs on four hits over three innings for Detroit. Edgar Ramos, 8-8 for Nashua in the independent Atlantic League last season, was the loser. He gave up one hit, a go-ahead homer by Steve Sisco in the eighth. Andruw Jones and Javy Lopez also homered for the Braves.
