PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-3 after the Seattle Mariners told him they were going to keep him, and Edgar Martinez hit his second home run of the spring in a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

``It's great we're going to keep him and we'll let him evolve here as a leader,'' Seattle manager Lou Piniella said of his three-time All-Star shortstop. ``It's a decision that certainly is going to be very fruitful for the Seattle organization and many more years to come.''

Rodriguez is eligible for free agency after the season and Seattle is worried he'll leave and the team won't get anything in return. But Mariners chairman Howard Lincoln and general manager Pat Gillick decided to risk it.

Martinez, 37, homered off loser Livan Hernandez in the second inning Wednesday. Winner Jamie Moyer limited the Giants to one hit in three innings. He was followed to the mound by Kevin Hodges, Sean Spencer, Jose Paniagua, Steve Sinclair and Kazuhiro Sasaki.

Sasaki, Japan's career saves leader, gave up the Giants' run on an RBI double by Doug Clark in the ninth. In his second relief appearance for Seattle, Sasaki struck out three in one inning.

Sasaki has a chance of unseating Jose Mesa as the Mariners' closer this season.

``I like what I saw,'' Piniella said. ``He gave up a run, but so what. He threw the ball better. He had better velocity and a better split-finger. I was impressed today.''

Seattle got two runs in the fifth off Shawn Estes on RBI singles by Mark McLemore and Carlos Guillen. Willie Bloomquist singled in a run in the eighth.

Notes: Ellis Burks (surgery on both knees) and closer Robb Nen (right elbow surgery) made their spring debuts for the Giants. Nen pitched a hitless inning. ``It's a step in the right direction,'' said Nen, recovering from right elbow surgery. ``I threw strikes out there, so I'm happy with that. It's nice to get the adrenaline going again. I'm on my way to getting back.'' ... Burks was 0-for-2. ``It felt a little strange facing live pitching again. The first time up I felt like a new born and stumbled out of the box. I got the hang of it pretty quickly though.'' ... The Mariners reassigned four players to their minor league camp: pitchers Jeff Heaverlo, Marc Kroon and Jake Meyer, and catcher Ryan Christianson. They also optioned pitcher Brian Fuentes to Triple-A Tacoma. Meyer was a minor leaguer acquired by Seattle from Cincinnati in the trade for Ken Griffey Jr. on Feb. 10. Christianson was Seattle's first-round draft choice last season.
