TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) _ Starting pitchers Brian Cooper and Steve Woodard were both hit hard Thursday, but their relievers were effective in the Anaheim Angels' 7-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rookie Mike Colangelo's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off Mike Rossiter drove in Orlando Palmeiro with the winning run.

The Brewers scored three runs in the first and three in the second off Cooper before veteran knuckleballer Tom Candiotti, Mike Holtz, Scot Shields and winner Steve Mintz combined for seven shutout innings.

Mo Vaughn, back in the Angels' lineup after a one-day absence, hit an RBI single in the first, and Woodard allowed five more runs in the third, with Tim Salmon's three-run homer the inning's big blow.

Vaughn sat out Wednesday's game due to a corneal abrasion of the left eye. Apparently, a piece of dry wall fell from a ceiling tile and into his eye while he was sleeping Tuesday night.

Palmeiro walked to open the Angels' ninth, took second on a sacrifice by Jason Bates and scored on Colangelo's liner to right-center.

Milwaukee's Jose Fernandez, who has 11 hits in 20 at-bats this spring, hit a two-run homer in the first, and two of the Brewers' three runs in the second came home on an error by second baseman Justin Baughman.
