FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Rick Ankiel pitched three scoreless innings in his first spring start, but Luis Matos hit a game-winning single in the ninth to lead the Baltimore Orioles over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4.

Ankiel, considered to be one of baseball's top pitching prospects, allowed two hits and struck out two Thursday. He missed his first scheduled start because of a sore shoulder.

The left-hander retired his first six batters before Will Clark doubled, opening the third. Mike Bordick reached on a one-out infield hit before Brady Anderson grounded out and Delino DeShields looked at a third strike.

``It was all right,'' Ankiel said. ``I missed my curveball a bunch of times and my mechanics weren't consistent. It was all right for the first time out there ... I didn't hit as many spots as I'd like to, but hopefully it will get better.''

With the score 4-4, Calvin Pickering led off the ninth with a single off Rick Heiserman. Tommy Davis then singled, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After an intentional walk, Matos hit the first pitch for a single.

The Orioles went up 4-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by Jesse Garcia and a run-scoring double by Rich Amaral, but St. Louis tied it with a two-run eighth.

Mark McGwire didn't make the trip for the Cardinals, which was just fine with Baltimore starter Mike Mussina.

``The last time I saw McGwire I struck him out,'' he said, referring to the 1999 All-Star Game. ``I can live with that for a while.''

Mussina pitched three scoreless innings, allowing four hits and working out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.

J.D. Drew went 2-for-4 with an RBI for St. Louis and is 9-for-19 this spring.

The Cardinals' Adam Kennedy was thrown out by Charles Johnson trying to steal in the fourth inning. It was only the third time in 17 tries that a St. Louis runner has been cut down attempting to steal.
