VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ The Los Angeles Dodgers found another way to lose Sunday.

After Angel Pena's three-run homer with two outs in the ninth tied the game, Larry Sutton doubled in the go-ahead run in the 10th as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Los Angeles 7-5, handing the Dodgers their 11th loss in 12 games this spring.

Starters Darryl Kile and Orel Hershiser turned in solid efforts, but the relief pitchers struggled.

Dodgers closer Jeff Shaw allowed four runs and six hits in the two innings, including Sutton's RBI double. Winner Mike James retired the first two batters in the Los Angeles ninth before Geronimo Berroa singled, Kevin Elster walked and Pena homered over the left-field fence.

It was the second straight solid outing for Hershiser, who allowed five hits and two runs in four innings. He also snagged a liner hit by Mark McGwire in the first. McGwire went hitless in three at-bats.

``I didn't catch the ball, the ball caught me,'' Hershiser said. ``It was a solid outing. I threw all fastballs except for one slider. I'm still working on getting in shape. I didn't feel like I had the awesome body or awesome arm strength.''

Hershiser looked good to manager Davey Johnson, who needed some good news on the heels of news that Carlos Perez had been arrested for drunken driving Saturday night.

``He was good; he was really good,'' Johnson said of Hershiser. ``It was fun watching him pitch. Other than that, the pitching was better, except at the end.''

Kile and Garrett Stephenson each allowed one run in four innings for the Cardinals.

Shawon Dunston, Thomas Howard, Lou Lucca and Placido Polanco had two hits each for St. Louis, while Mark Grudzielanek had two hits and Adrian Beltre hit his third homer of the spring for the Dodgers.
