  RECAP | BOX SCORE

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) _ Bobby J. Jones reflected back on his outing and knew he had mixed results.

``I thought my stuff was good, but if you just look at the box score, you'll read a little bit different picture,'' he said Tuesday after the New York Mets lost to the Florida Marlins 7-6.

Jones allowed seven hits and five runs in four innings, but just three of the runs were earned. He gave up a solo homer in the third to former-Met Preston Wilson, then allowed a two-run homer in the fourth to Ramon Castro that put Florida ahead 5-3.

``I felt great. I thought I made a lot of good pitches, but I made one mistake pitch on the changeup for the two-run homer,'' said Jones, 1-2 this spring. ``That was the only pitch I was disappointed in, Preston's home run. Some of the guys said it fooled him a little bit, but he hit it hard and got it up in the wind.''

Jones threw 32 pitches in the first inning as Florida took a 2-0 lead with two unearned runs.

Luis Castillo beat out a routine ground ball to shortstop Domingo Cedeno, third baseman Charlie Hayes let a potential inning-ending ground ball get by him and second baseman Kurt Abbott lost a pop fly in the sun.

``I didn't like the way we played our defense even though we had different guys in there,'' Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. ``But they still have to make the plays, that put a little damper on things.''

In his third outing of the spring, Jones threw 74 pitches.

``My command's not where I want it to be if I had to start the season now, but I'm confident that when that time comes, I'll have completed the things I need to have done down here,'' he said.

Winner Vladimir Nunez allowed three runs and six hits in four innings. He gave up hits to his first four batters, including an RBI double to Todd Zeile and a run-scoring single to Derek Bell. Hayes hit an RBI double with two outs.

Garth Brooks grounded out to second in the ninth against Antonio Alfonseca and is 0-for-10 this spring.

Ventura, recovering from a shoulder injury, is not ready to play defense. ... Melvin Mora, who was hit by pitches twice during Monday's game, should be ready to play again Thursday. ... Marlins SS Mendy Lopez pulled a hamstring in the seventh while running out a base hit and left the game.
