PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ The Seattle Mariners finally got to see Brett Tomko pitch.

Tomko, acquired last month from Cincinnati in the trade for Ken Griffey Jr., allowed three runs in 2 2-3 innings Tuesday in a 13-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics, who won their eighth straight.

``It wasn't too bad, but it felt funny to be out there,'' Tomko said.

Tomko, 26, has spent most of this spring in the training room because of inflammation of his left Achilles' tendon. He allowed five hits, struck out three and walked none. Just two of the runs off him were earned.

``I've been kind of sitting in the training room the last two weeks and I need to get comfortable out there,'' Tomko said. ``But I felt really good. My arm felt good and my foot felt good. Today was good. No pain out there.''

Winner Kevin Appier pitched the first four innings and allowed one run and four hits in four innings. Loser Freddy Garcia gave up six runs _ three earned _ and five hits in 3 1-3 innings.

Jeremy Giambi hit his first home run of the spring for the A's and John Mabry homered for the Mariners, who made four errors: by Carlos Guillen, Charles Gipson, Jay Buhner and Jose Flores.

Tomko, dealt to Seattle along with center fielder Mike Cameron and two others, said he didn't feel any pressure because of the trade for Griffey.

Tomko, just 5-7 last season, wants to be in the Mariners' rotation this season as their fourth or fifth starter behind Jamie Moyer, Aaron Sele and Garcia. He's competing with Gil Meche and John Halama, both incumbent starters, for a starting job.

``I just want to get healthy,'' Tomko said. ``If I know I'm healthy and I build my arm strength up, I know I'm going to be there.''

Notes: The A's matched their longest spring winning streak since an eight-gamer in 1994. In 12 spring games, they've scored 123 runs. ... The Mariners had three regulars out: Alex Rodriguez and John Olerud were sent home because of the flu and Dan Wilson has a concussion from Monday, when he was hit on the top of his catching helmet by the swing of Milwaukee's Lyle Mouton. ... The Mariners optioned three pitchers to the minor leagues. LHP Rob Ramsay and RHP Ivan Montane were sent to Triple-A Tacoma, and RHP Chris Mears to Class-A Lancaster.
