BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) _ Frank Catalanotto hit a two-run single in a three-run fifth inning Tuesday, leading the Texas Rangers over the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Winner Rick Helling allowed one run and six hits in four innings, striking out four. Chuck Smith gave up a run in the ninth on an fielding error by shortstop Kelly Dransfeldt but got his first save. He escaped a first-and-third jam by getting Mike Benjamin to hit a game-ending ground out. Jason Schmidt, scheduled to be the Pirates' opening-day starter, allowed three hits in four scoreless innings. With Texas trailing 1-0, Catalanotto singled off Jason Phillips. Dave Pavlas then forced in a run by walking Lee Stevens with the bases Catalanotto had two of Texas' four hits. Pittsburgh's Wil Cordero went 3-for-3 after missing five games with the flu. Jason Kendall had two hits.
