BOX SCORE
PHOENIX (AP) _ Matt Stairs singled to drive in the tying run and Jeremy Giambi followed with a sacrifice fly as the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Anaheim Angels 4-3 Thursday for their ninth straight spring win. Oakland improved its record to a major-league best 11-1, overcoming a two-homer performance by Scott Spiezio, a former member of the A's. Mo Vaughn also homered for the Angels, whose three-game winning streak was stopped. With Oakland trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Terrence Long and Jason Giambi hit consecutive singles and Stairs, who sat out the last five days to rest a sore right elbow, singled home the tying run off loser Greg Cadaret. Jeremy Giambi put Oakland in front with a fly ball to deep left, scoring pinch runner David McCarty. Winner Tim Kubinski pitched a scoreless inning, and Luis Vizcaino pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Anaheim starter Scott Schoeneweis allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. Omar Olivares, who left Anaheim for Oakland as part of a trade last July, also went five innings and gave up two runs, on solo homers by Vaughn and Spiezio. Spiezio also homered in the sixth off T.J. Mathews.
