PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ John Halama might be on the verge of losing his starting job for the Seattle Mariners after allowing two home runs in five innings of a 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. In three spring starts, left-hander John Halama has given up five home runs and has an 11.13 ERA. With the addition of Brett Tomko to the Seattle Mariners' staff, Halama's job is in jeopardy. Halama allowed home runs to Jose Hernandez and Henry Blano. ``I'm not looking at my stats right now,'' Halama said after Wednesday's game. ``If that was the case then I probably wouldn't make any of the 30 teams. I've got an ERA of who knows how high. ``My thing in spring training is that I'm looking to get ready for the season,'' he added. ``I'm not looking to do anything else. You're going to have your bad games and you're going to have your good games.'' Halama was an 11-game winner for Seattle last season after being acquired from Houston on July 31, 1998, in a trade that sent Randy Johnson to the Astros. In Wednesday's game he allowed a two-run homer to Hernandez in the fourth inning and a leadoff homer to Blanco in the fifth. ``When you get toward your pitch count limit you start to get tired and you start to get out of whack,'' Halama said. ``For the most part, I started getting out of whack by the fourth or fifth inning.'' He said he did not know what manager Lou Piniella was thinking. ``I want to get out there and do good, but I really don't know what Lou and (pitching coach) Bryan Price are looking for,'' he said. ``Are they looking for numbers? Because if that's the case I'm not putting them up.'' In his five innings, Halama gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out three. He didn't walk a batter. Joe Oliver homered for Seattle. Right-hander Jeff D'Amico, who is recovering from two injury-plagued seasons, pitched three strong innings. He allowed no runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one. D'Amico was scratched from his last start five days ago due to tenderness in his shoulder. Notes: The Mariners said they expected right-hander Gil Meche to be able to make his first start as scheduled against the New York Yankees on April 7 as their No. 4 starter. Meche walked off the field after two innings of his scheduled five-inning minor league game on Tuesday because of stiffness in the back of his shoulder. ``We don't anticipate him missing his first turn,'' Piniella said. Meche will rest five or six days before throwing again, according to Piniella. He's scheduled to make two more spring starts. ... The Brewers announced they have signed third baseman Charlie Hayes to a minor league contract. Hayes, 34, was released by the New York Mets this spring.
