PHOENIX (AP) _ Jeromy Burnitz hit a pair of homers and opening day starter Steve Woodard worked seven solid innings as Milwaukee defeated San Francisco 12-4 on Wednesday.

Marquis Grissom and Tyler Houston also homered for Milwaukee, which had 16 hits and raised its spring record to 10-17-2 under first-year manager Davey Lopes.

"We haven't been having any trouble scoring runs this spring, that's for sure," Lopes said.

Woodard, who allowed one earned run and seven hits in his longest stint of the season, struck out eight for the second consecutive start and did not walk a batter. Although it has been known for some time that he would start the season opener April 3 against Cincinnati, Lopes made the official announcement on Wednesday.

"It was a very positive outing for Steve today," Lopes said. "Obviously, he deserves to be the starter."

San Francisco's Livan Hernandez gave up a homer to Grissom on his first pitch and saw his outing go downhill from there. He allowed a two-run homer to Burnitz in the first and a three-run shot to the All-Star in the third. Houston, who had been bothered by a bruised shin, homered in the fourth.

Hernandez gave up 11 hits and nine earned runs in four innings.

Felipe Crespo hit a homer for the Giants, who sent most of their regular players to San Francisco to become acclimated to Pac Bell Park, the new stadium that will debut with an exhibition game between Milwaukee and San Francisco on Friday night.
