SEATTLE (AP) -- Jay Buhner homered and drove in four runs Wednesday night, and the Seattle Mariners bounced back from a season-opening loss to Pedro Martinez, beating the Boston Red Sox 9-3. Buhner had been part of Seattle's opening-day lineup for nine straight seasons but was held out of Tuesday's game because he was 0-for-8 against Martinez, striking out all eight times. Seattle, the beneficiary of seven walks, overcame a pair of solo home runs by Brian Daubach. Alex Rodriguez and John Olerud also homered for the Mariners, and John Valentin homered for the Red Sox. The crowd of 29,242 was the smallest at Safeco Field in 44 dates since the ballpark opened last July 15. Kazuhiro Sasaki, the Japanese closer Seattle signed during the offseason, made his Mariners debut, pitching a one-hit ninth with one strikeout. Seattle loaded the bases in the first against Ramon Martinez (0-1) when Mike Cameron singled, Mark McLemore walked and Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Olerud hit a sacrifice fly, John Mabry singled for a 2-0 lead and Buhner hit a three-run, opposite-field homer on a 1-2 pitch. Buhner is 3-for-6 with a double and two homers against Ramon Martinez, Pedro's brother. Freddy Garcia (1-0), runner-up in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season, allowed two runs and two hits in five innings. After Daubach's solo homer pulled Boston to 6-1 in the second, Martinez loaded the bases in the bottom half on walks to McLemore, Rodriguez and Olerud. John Wasdin relieved and forced in runs with walks to Olerud and Buhner. Martinez gave up seven runs, three hits and four walks in 1 1-3 innings. Daubach hit a 438-foot drive to right-center field in the fourth for the first multihomer game of his career. Rodriguez homered in the fourth off Wasdin and Olerud in the sixth off Wakefield for a 9-2 lead. Valentin hit a solo homer off Frankie Rodriguez in the seventh.
