GAME LOG
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Garret Anderson hit a three-run homer and Jason Dickson pitched 6 2/3 strong innings in his first regular-season appearance in more than a year as the Anaheim Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 Friday night. Dickson, who missed last season after shoulder surgery in March 1999, allowed two runs and four hits -- a home run by Carl Everett and three doubles -- en route to his first victory in the majors since July 12, 1998, at Seattle. Leadoff doubles by Troy O'Leary in the second inning and Trot Nixon in the fourth were the only hits off Dickson until Everett connected on an 0-2 pitch leading off the seventh. Two outs later, Mike Stanley chased the right-hander with a double. Brian Daubach sent Kent Mercker's second pitch over the right-field fence for his third homer in four games as the Red Sox closed to 6-3. Troy Glaus homered in the seventh off Tim Wakefield. Anaheim took a 3-0 lead in the first against Pete Schourek (0-1) on a double by Adam Kennedy, a two-out walk to Tim Salmon and a first-pitch homer by Anderson that just cleared the 18-foot wall in right-center. Schourek, who last pitched for the Red Sox in 1998 before going to Pittsburgh as a free agent, re-signed with Boston last Sunday. He gave up three runs, three hits and four walks in five innings. Anderson's fly to left stranded three runners in the fifth, but the Angels scored three times in the sixth against Rich Garces on a two-run double by Gary DiSarcina and a bases-loaded grounder by Mo Vaughn. Game notesVaughn, who played 293 games the previous two seasons without a stolen base, swiped his second in two games. He has 30 steals in 1,189 big league games, including a career-high 11 for the Red Sox in 1995. ... Boston 3B John Valentin had his sore left knee examined in Los Angeles on Friday by Angels team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum. Valentin, who also sat out Thursday night's game at Seattle, will continue taking anti-inflammatory medication and rest for a couple of days before he is re-examined. ... The Red Sox pitching staff, which issued the fewest walks in the majors last season, already has allowed 21 bases on balls in its first four games. ... Saturday is the sixth anniversary of Mercker's no-hitter for the Atlanta Braves against Los Angeles in his first start of 1994. Since then, his major league record is 46-47. ... Of Anderson's career-high 21 homers last season, only one came with more than one man on base. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Boston Clubhouse Anaheim Clubhouse RECAPS Kansas City 10 Minnesota 6
