MONTREAL (AP) -- Geoff Blum made the most of his opportunity.

Blum's pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning rallied
the Montreal Expos to a 10-9 win over the San Diego Padres on
Saturday.
"It's extremely difficult to come off the bench, but you want
to be in that situation," Blum said. "You're looking for that
chance."
The Expos trailed 8-7 following Bret Boone's solo homer off Anthony Telford (2-0) in the top half of the eighth.
Blum doubled off reliever Donne Wall (0-2) to score Mike
Mordecai and Wilton Guerrero with the go-ahead run in the bottom
half. Rondell White doubled one out later to make it 10-8.
"It was a great experience and it will give me a lot of
confidence for next time," Blum said. "It sets the tone.
Hopefully we can look back at this game as something that gave us
the confidence to come back and win games."
The Padres scored one run off Expos closer Ugueth Urbina in the
ninth after Al Martin tripled and scored on Damian Jackson's RBI
single. Urbina, who led the NL with 41 saves last season, then
finished it out for his first save in his second opportunity.
"I was glad to see Ugie get his first save of the year," Expos
manager Felipe Alou said. "He was struggling with his command
again."
Vladimir Guerrero and Lee Stevens each hit two-run homers off
Padres starter Sterling Hitchcock in the fifth. Guerrero drove in
three runs and has four homers and 11 RBI on the season.
Stevens, acquired from Texas on March 16 in a three-team deal,
connected for his first NL home run. He had 82 homers in seven
years in the AL, including 24 for the Rangers last season.
"I put a good swing on one and happened to get it up in the
air," Stevens said. "I'm not a pure home run hitter, but they'll
come when my swing is right.
Ryan Klesko had four RBIs and homered for the second straight
game for San Diego, which had won three straight games. Ruben
Rivera also homered for the Padres.
Klesko hit a sacrifice fly in the first, had an RBI grounder in
the third, and added a two-run homer off Dustin Hermanson in the
fifth.
Tony Gwynn returned to the lineup after missing the Padres' last three games with a sore right elbow after he was hit by a pitch
from Al Leiter in Monday's opener.
"Boonie hit the home run and we were trying to get another
inning to get to Hoffie," Gwynn said. "They came back and put
three urns on the board, and they got the first crack at it and
Urbina shut the door."
Gwynn, who got his 3,000th career hit last Aug. 6 at Olympic Stadium, hit an RBI double in the first and added a single for his 3,069th career hit.
"I did all right," Gwynn said. "It was good to be back out
there. It's unfortunate that we lost, but that's going to happen."
Hitchcock, the Padres' opening day starter in New York, allowed
seven runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out six and
walked four.
Hermanson, who lost Montreal's opener on Monday, allowed seven
runs and eight hits in five innings.
Game notes
Gwynn's needs 13 hits to surpass Cap Anson's 3,081 hits for
17th place in career hits. ... Gwynn has 117 career hits at Olympic
Stadium. ... Expos leadoff hitter Terry Jones struck out in each of
his four at-bats. ... Montreal reliever Steve Kline struck out four
in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
