SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Al Martin hit a two-run homer and Woody Williams pitched a strong 7 1-3 innings and drove in a run to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 win Saturday night over the Houston Astros. Martin gave the Padres a 2-1 lead with a two-run shot to center off Jose Lima (1-2) in San Diego's four-run third inning. Williams drew a walk on four pitches to precede Martin's at-bat. Damien Jackson followed with a solo home run, and San Diego added another run on two-out infield singles by Phil Nevin and Eric Owens and Bret Boone's RBI single. Williams (2-1), who gave up four homers in his last start, allowed two runs on five hits. Williams also added an RBI double in the sixth inning to put the Padres ahead 5-2. Williams left in the eighth after giving up a leadoff single to Tony Eusebio and making a throwing error on a ground ball by pinch-hitter Billy Spiers. Reliever Carlos Almanzar came on to strike out Craig Biggio and get Roger Cedeno on a groundout. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth, allowing an RBI double by Ken Caminiti, for his second save. Jeff Bagwell, who hit a grand slam Friday night, had a solo home run off Williams. Lima, a 21-game winner last season, gave up five runs on nine hits in seven innings. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the second when Richard Hidalgo led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Tony Eusebio's single. Notes: Houston's Moises Alou was scratched from the starting lineup. Alou left Friday's game in the sixth inning with a tight right calf. ... Padres CF Ruben Rivera was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 12, with tendinitis in his left wrist. Rivera, the eighth Padre to be placed on the DL, was replaced by OF Mike Darr, who was recalled from Triple A Las Vegas. ... San Diego defeated Houston for just the second time in 11 games. ... Caminiti played for the first time since straining his left hamstring Sunday. Caminiti, making his first appearance against the Padres since signing with Houston after the 1998 season, appeared to still be hampered by the injury. With runners at first and second in the first inning, Caminiti hit a slow chopper to 2B Bret Boone, who flipped the ball to SS Damien Jackson. Despite holding onto the ball as he jumped to avoid the hard-sliding Jeff Bagwell, Jackson landed on his feet and still threw out Caminiti, who appeared to be running at half speed. ... San Diego RF Tony Gwynn (sore left knee) sat out his fifth straight game.
