Martin keeping legal problems out of mind

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Despite his off-field legal troubles, Al Martin has been able to keep focusing on baseball.

Martin, with assault charges still pending in Arizona, scored a team-record five runs and hit a two-run homer in the Padres' 13-3 rout of the Houston Astros on Sunday.

"This is what I get paid to do," said Martin of his performance. "I just let everything else take care of itself."

Martin shocked teammates and team officials when he was arrested and charged on two misdemeanor assault charges March 20 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Police are still considering whether to charge Martin with bigamy.

But Martin's potential legal problems seemingly have had little effect on his play.

Martin has scored 15 runs as the Padres' leadoff man while replacing Quilvio Veras, traded in the offseason to Atlanta. Martin, who tied his career high with four hits, is batting .315.

"He is really a great person," teammate Phil Nevin said. "He's a good person to have on the team, a good influence on some of the younger players."

Martin, who also hit a two-run homer in Saturday's 5-3 win over Houston, has been impressed by the support he has received.

"People (in San Diego) have nothing but positive things to say," Martin said. "I don't know if it would be like that in any other city in baseball."

Nevin, who had four RBI, hit a two-run homer in the first to put San Diego ahead 3-0 and added a pair of RBI singles. He has homered three times in four games, giving him six on the season.

Martin broke the Padres' record for runs scored, achieved 35 times previously, when he scored on Eric Owens' infield single in the seventh. Owens had a career-high four hits, and San Diego had 18 in all.

Staked to 7-0 lead after three innings, Matt Clement (2-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. He has won six straight decisions since losing at Philadelphia last Aug. 25.

Chris Holt (0-3) was pounded for 10 runs -- nine earned -- and 12 hits in three-plus innings.

"Today it seemed (Martin) was on everything," Holt said. "It didn't matter what anybody threw. He was going to hit it."

San Diego broke open the game with a four-run third inning on Nevin's RBI single, Bret Boone's sacrifice fly and Mike Darr's two-run single. The Padres used five consecutive singles to score three runs in the fourth.

Daryle Ward drove in all three Astros runs with an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth.

Game notes
Holt, 13-29 in his career, lost his first six decisions last year before beating Montreal on June 20. ... The Padres won the last two games of the series after dropping nine of their previous 11 games to Houston. ... Owens has hit safely in all 11 games he's played. ... Astros RF Moises Alou (calf) was held out of the lineup for the second straight game. ... San Diego RF Tony Gwynn (sore left knee), who had been expected back Friday night, has missed six games in a row. Padres manager Bruce Bochy said "odds are more likely" Gwynn will play Tuesday at St. Louis.
