Morris costs Pirates with two-base error

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Warren Morris gave up the lead as quickly as he put the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead.

Morris's two-base error at second base allowed the Cincinnati Reds to score the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning of a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

"I catch that ball 99 out of 100 times," Morris said. "You have to be aggressive because the ball was spinning and there's no telling where it would end up if it hit the ground. I tried to be aggressive and catch it and it hit off the end of my glove."

Morris had given the Pirates a 5-4 lead with a solo homer in the seventh.

"You sit there thinking that Warren just got the big hit to win the game for you and all of a sudden the opposite happens," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. "He's a steady fielder so you don't expect him to make an error in that situation. He just missed it. That will happen sometimes."

Jason Christiansen (1-2) walked Sean Casey to open the eighth and gave up a single to Ken Griffey Jr.

Jose Silva came in to face Dante Bichette, who got the fifth sacrifice bunt of his career and first since July 22, 1992.

"These guys are professionals," Reds manager Jack McKeon said. "They should be able to do the job. They take it as part of the game."

One out later, Silva threw a wild pitch to Aaron Boone that allowed Casey to score the tying run. Morris then was handcuffed by Boone's soft liner that skipped off his glove and into short right field for the error.

"I was saying, oh shoot ... and then we got a lucky break," Boone said. "That's what you need sometimes. Maybe this will be the spark that gets us playing up to our ability."

Scott Williamson (2-2) pitched two innings for the win, and Danny Graves pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

The Reds managed just two hits in the first six innings against Francisco Cordova but rallied for three runs in the seventh.

Bichette singled and Eddie Taubensee doubled. After Boone walked to load the bases, Scott Sauerbeck gave up a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Alex Ochoa.

Mike Garcia relieved and surrendered Dmitri Young's pinch-hit double and a game-tying sacrifice fly to Chris Stynes.

Pat Meares hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Pirates against Ron Villone, who allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

Pittsburgh's first run scored in the third when Morris doubled and scored on Brian Giles' sacrifice fly.

Cordova allowed four runs and four hits in six innings.
