RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ The Detroit Tigers capitalized on a blunder by rookie catcher Matthew LeCroy for the second straight game and rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 10-8 Friday night.

The Tigers scored five runs in the seventh after LeCroy was called for catcher's interference shortly after Jacque Jones had put the Twins ahead 7-4 with a three-run homer off Hideo Nomo.

Bobby Higginson, who homered in the fourth two pitches after LeCroy lost track of his foul ball that hit a speaker, lined out to first but was awarded the bag because he hit LeCroy's mitt during his swing.

That loaded the bases with nobody out.

Hector Carrasco (3-2) then gave up an RBI groundout to Gregg Jefferies and threw a wild pitch that plated another run, making it 7-6, and bringing on Travis Miller, who gave up Deivi Cruz's game-tying RBI single.

Pinch-hitter Wendell Magee's RBI single off Miller gave Detroit an 8-7 lead, and Brad Ausmus followed with another run-scoring single.

On Thursday night, LeCroy's interference led to a three-run sixth inning in Minnesota's 8-6 loss to Detroit.

On Friday, LeCroy hit a home run, but it was not enough to overcome his mistakes.

Minnesota pulled to 9-8 in the bottom half of the inning on Butch Huskey's RBI groundout. But Juan Gonzalez, who had three hits, hit an RBI double off Johan Santana in the ninth.

Danny Patterson (1-0) earned his first victory since Aug. 10, 1999, even though he allowed a run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Todd Jones pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Jacques Jones' homer in the sixth sailed just over the glove of center fielder Juan Encarnacion.

Encarnacion's seventh-inning single extended his hitting streak to 17 games, best in the majors.

Jay Canizaro wasted no time impressing his new Twins teammates. He replaced second baseman Todd Walker, who was demoted to Salt Lake this week and asked to be traded.

In the bottom of the first, Canizaro scooped a high bouncer on the short hop and threw to first to nip the runner. After getting high-fives in the dugout, he doubled off the right-field wall and scored on Ron Coomer's single.

After LeCroy's solo homer, his second, made it 2-0, Canizaro beat out a relay throw on a fielder's choice in the third and later scored on Coomer's single for a 3-0 lead.

But Sean Bergman had a hard time finding the plate or holding the lead.

Higginson pulled Detroit to 3-2 with a two-run homer after LeCroy lost his foul ball behind home plate when it bounced off a overhanging speaker and landed a few feet from him.

Notes: Twins manager Tom Kelly is two victories shy of 1,000 for his career. Said Tigers manager Phil Garner: "Good for him. I hope he gets it next week." The teams play two more games this weekend. ... Tigers 3B Dean Palmer and Garner served the eighth and final games of their suspensions for brawling with the White Sox last month.
