BOSTON (AP) -- Brian Rose, who failed to get out of the second in two of his other four starts, pitched six strong innings and Carl Everett homered as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Monday night. Rose (2-2) started with three perfect innings and left after six with a 3-2 lead after allowing just four hits and no walks. He began the game with a 9.20 ERA following his appearance last Tuesday, when he gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings in a 7-6 win over Detroit. Derek Lowe pitched 1 1/3 innings for his eighth save in eight chances, lowering his ERA to 0.87 in 20 2/3 innings. After Paul Konerko's leadoff single and a sacrifice, Carlos Lee grounded out, Greg Norton walked and pinch-hitter Herbert Perry bounced into a forceout. Boston won for the sixth time in eight games. Chicago, which leads the AL Central, has lost seven of eight. The White Sox failed to capitalize on a seventh-inning threat after Tim Wakefield replaced Rose. With two outs, Chris Singleton singled and took third on Lee's ground-rule double. But Wakefield struck out Norton. Everett's 11th homer had given Boston a 3-1 lead in the fourth against Tanyon Sturtze (1-2), but Chicago closed in the sixth on Ray Durham's triple and Frank Thomas' second sacrifice fly of the game. Boston scored in the first inning when its first three batters -- Jose Offerman, Trot Nixon and Brian Daubach -- singled, loading the bases. But only one of them scored. Nomar Garciaparra followed with a sacrifice fly before Troy O'Leary grounded into a double play. The Red Sox made it 2-0 in the third on a walk to Wilton Veras, a groundout and an RBI double by Daubach. Rose didn't allow a runner until Durham started the fourth with a double. He took third on Jose Valentin's sacrifice bunt and scored on Thomas' sacrifice fly. Rose had lost his first start of the season, 7-5 at Anaheim, when he gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings. And in his second start, a 13-6 loss to Oakland, he allowed six runs in two-thirds of an inning, the shortest outing of his career. But he rebounded with six shutout innings in a 10-0 win over Detroit. He didn't pitch again until last Tuesday because of four consecutive rainouts, and the layoff showed as he struggled against the Tigers. Game notesThe Red Sox recalled LHP Tim Young from Pawtucket of the International League and optioned RHP Rob Stanifer to Pawtucket. Stanifer had no record and an 8.59 ERA in four appearances covering 7 1/3 innings. ... Sturtze made his first start of the season, replacing LHP Jim Parque, who began serving his three-game suspension for his role in a brawl April 22 with Detroit. ... The farthest Rose has gone with a perfect game is five innings last May 30. His bid ended when Cleveland's Dave Justice, leading off the sixth, reached safely on a throwing error by Garciaparra at shortstop. Rose gave up two unearned runs and left after six innings.
