ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Darryl Kile ended a string of forgettable interleague performances by allowing three hits in eight innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 Friday night. Kile (8-3) had been 0-6 with a 5.97 ERA in nine starts against American League teams. He walked the first two batters of the game but escaped by retiring the heart of the Indians' order and allowed only one hit -- Jim Thome's 15th home run in the fourth -- in the first five innings. Kile struck out nine and walked three to tie Garrett Stephenson, scheduled to pitch Saturday against Bartolo Colon, for the team lead in victories. He also raised his career record to 100-98. Cleveland, which placed All-Star right fielder Manny Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list Friday, managed only two other hits -- one-out singles in the sixth by Roberto Alomar and Thome. Ray Lankford's two-run, two-out triple in the fifth off Mark Watson gave the Cardinals a 4-1 lead. The hit was only Lankford's fourth in 24 at-bats against left-handers. Indians starter Jaret Wright (3-4) lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Wright escaped damage in the first and third by striking out Mark McGwire -- who was 0-for-3 -- and Jim Edmonds with two men on. But he walked Lankford and J.D. Drew to start the fourth. Placido Polanco followed with an RBI single and a second run scored on a double play as the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead. In two starts since coming off the disabled list from a strained shoulder, Wright has given up 11 earned runs in six innings. Fernando Vina added an RBI single in the sixth for St. Louis. Game notesRamirez, batting .322 with 47 RBI, injured his leg while running out a grounder during Monday's game against the Anaheim Angels. ... Vina has been hit by a pitch a major league-leading 13 times after getting plunked to open the bottom of the first. ... Polanco (85 at-bats) and Shawon Dunston (72) have yet to walk. ... The Indians entered the game 28-21 in the four years of interleague play, best of any AL team. ... The teams met for the first time since 1998, when the Indians swept a two-game series at Jacobs Field. ... Thome's homer tied Ramirez for sixth on the Indians' career list at 211. ...
