BOSTON (AP) -- When Nomar Garciaparra drifted back to field the popup, there was little doubt he would get it. After all, he catches most everything that comes his way.

The suspense was whether Garciaparra would get back up after
colliding with center fielder Carl Everett on the play. He did that, too.
"It definitely feels better when you come out with a win,"
Garciaparra said Thursday night after doubling twice to raise his
major league-leading average to .396 and help the Boston Red Sox
beat the New York Yankees 4-2.
Ramon Martinez pitched 6 2/3 strong innings for the Red Sox, who lost the first two games of the series by a combined 25-1 before winning the next two to retake the AL East lead, a half-game ahead
of the Yankees and Toronto.
"It's unfortunate. After beating Pedro (Martinez) on Tuesday,
we had visions of three, maybe four," Yankees manager Joe Torre
said. "We got a little greedy. Two-two is disappointing. It feels
like we lost the series."
Bernie Williams homered for the third consecutive game for New York, which agreed Thursday to a tentative deal with Detroit to obtain slugger Juan Gonzalez -- if the Yankees can sign him to a
contract extension.

Yankees demote Westbrook, pick Ford to start Friday; Wasdin called up for Sox

BOSTON (AP) -- The New York Yankees called up Ben Ford from
Triple-A Columbus and said he will start Friday night's game
against the Chicago White Sox.
Jake Westbrook, who lasted just 2 2-3 innings Thursday night in
a 4-2 loss to Boston, was sent down after the game to make room for
Ford.
Meanwhile, John Wasdin, who has been mentioned as possible
trade bait, was recalled by the Boston Red Sox from Triple-A
Pawtucket on Thursday and will start the opener of the weekend
series against Toronto.
Wasdin was 0-2 with a 4.56 ERA in 17 games for Boston before
being sent down. He was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA at Triple-A.
Wasdin will start Friday night in place of Jeff Fassero, placed
on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of arm problems. Wasdin
was 8-3 with a 4.12 ERA for the Red Sox last season.

"You know George (Steinbrenner) is never shy about using his
pocketbook, especially when he thinks he needs to do it to win,"
said Red Sox first baseman Mike Stanley, a former Yankee. "But
we're in first place. Who says we need to do anything?"
Martinez (6-4) rebounded from one of his worst starts of the
season to hold New York to two runs and four hits, striking out a
season-high seven. Jake Westbrook (0-2), making his second major
league start, gave up four runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Derek Lowe pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save.
Garciaparra doubled to lead off the second, extending his
hitting streak to 12 games. He doubled again in the fourth, briefly
raising his batting average above .400.
But he gave the Boston fans a scare when he collided with
Everett while fielding a popup in center field in the seventh. The
Red Sox shortstop threw the ball into the infield sitting on the
grass but then rolled over, clutching his calf.
Manager Jimy Williams and trainer Jim Rowe ran out to tend to
him, but after a few minutes Garciaparra got up and returned to his
position.
"Two kids wanting to catch the ball. The noise is loud,"
Williams said. "You don't want to leave an injured player in the
game, but he got up and the sting went away. ... It was gratifying
to see that. He's a key, key player for us."
On his way back to the dugout, Williams stopped at the mound to
replace Martinez with Bryce Florie.
Garciaparra led off the next inning and lined out to left. He
also made a leaping catch in the ninth.
"I didn't think about it (his leg). I just wanted to make the
play," he said after icing down no less than four different body
parts, including his right calf. "Right now I'm not looking
forward to getting up tomorrow."
Martinez made it past the fifth inning just twice in his
previous six starts, allowing seven runs in three innings Saturday
against Toronto. He retired the first two New York batters before
walking Paul O'Neill and giving up Williams' 16th homer.
Boston tied it in the second when Garciaparra doubled and scored
on Everett's single. Everett took third on Brian Daubach's single and scored on Jason Varitek's sacrifice fly.
In the third, Jeff Frye doubled, Trot Nixon walked and
Garciaparra doubled to make it 4-3. Everett was intentionally
walked to load the bases, then Daubach singled; Nixon scored, but
Garciaparra was called out at the plate even though replays
appeared to show that he was never tagged.
Game notes
Westbrook didn't last much longer in his second
major-league start than he did in his first. On Saturday, he gave
up six runs in 1 2-3 innings against the Chicago White Sox. ...
Chuck Knoblauch made another throwing error -- his fifth in eight games, throwing wide of first base in the fourth. ... Garciaparra
briefly raised his batting average above .400. ... The Red Sox
recalled John Wasdin from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday night against Toronto in place of Jeff Fassero, who is on the disabled
list. ... Frye has hit in 27 of his last 29 games. ... Everett
failed to homer against the Yankees -- the first time he has failed
to homer in 11 series at Fenway Park this season. ... Derek Jeter
was held hitless for just the third time in 23 games since coming
off the disabled list May 27. ... With a crowd of 33,744, their
20th sellout, the Red Sox brought their attendance to 1,008,402,
the quickest they have passed one million since 1991. ... The
Yankees said they will call up Ben Ford to start Friday night's
game against the White Sox.
