D-Backs beat Rockies, take 2-game lead

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona starter Todd Stottlemyre knew early on that he wouldn't be around long Sunday night.

Stottlemyre left after one inning with an injured elbow, but the Diamondbacks scored six runs in the first to beat Colorado 8-3 to remain in first place in the NL West.

Stottlemyre left the game after throwing 14 pitches in the first inning with inflammation in his right elbow. Stottlemyre, who earlier spent 2½ weeks on the DL with elbow inflammation, allowed one run and two hits.

Erubiel Durazo
Erubiel Durazo, just 24 hours removed from the DL, hits a three-run homer off the Rockies' Pedro Astacio in the first inning.

"I had a tough time cutting the ball loose in the bullpen," said Stottlemyre, who will undergo an MRI on Monday. "I felt like the adrenaline and emotion would take over and I could get through it. But from the first pitch on it was pretty painful."

After retiring Todd Helton on a fly ball to the warning track in center to end the first, Stottlemyre said something to Arizona manager Buck Showalter at the dugout steps and walked down the tunnel to the clubhouse.

"When Todd isn't fighting or arguing with you, you have a pretty good idea that he's in some discomfort," Showalter said.

Earlier in the day, the Diamondbacks placed third baseman Matt Williams on the 15-day DL with a strained right quadriceps muscle and recalled Danny Klassen from Triple-A Tucson.

Williams previously had spent 43 days on the disabled list after breaking a bone in foot during the last week of spring training. Williams injured his quad while on a rehabilitation assignment with Double-A El Paso.

Erubiel Durazo hit his seventh homer for the Diamondbacks, who won two of three to open a two-game lead over the Rockies in the NL West.

"We're still on top of the division and we're playing beat-up," said Mike Morgan (3-1), who pitched four-plus innings in relief of Stottlemyre to earn the win.

As Morgan warmed up in the bullpen, the Diamondbacks rallied from the 1-0 deficit to score six runs off Pedro Astacio (6-5).

Tony Womack, Jay Bell and Luis Gonzalez opened with singles, tying the game at 1. Durazo, activated from the disabled list Saturday, followed with a three-run homer that landed a few feet in front of Morgan in the Diamondbacks' bullpen for a 4-1 Arizona lead.

Astacio struck out Steve Finley and Travis Lee before giving up a single to Damian Miller and walking Craig Counsell and pinch-hitter Brian Anderson, who started Friday night's game.

Womack got his second hit of the inning to score Miller and Counsell and make it 6-1.

"The first inning I was behind just about every batter," Astacio said. "I didn't have good location. When you're behind ever hitter like I was, they can hit the pitches they want."

Morgan, the second of five Arizona pitchers, allowed one run and three hits.

"I'm prepared day in and day out," Morgan said. "I'm a baseball player. I'm not just a pitcher. When I come in it doesn't matter if it's the first inning or the ninth, a spot start or save. I take it one pitch at a time. My approach is the same."

Colorado took an early lead against Stottlemyre. Larry Walker tripled off the padding at the top of the wall in right-center field, missing a home run by inches, and Jeffrey Hammonds followed with a run-scoring infield single.

Astacio allowed seven runs and nine hits in three-plus innings with four walks and five strikeouts.

"I don't think his stuff was all that bad," Bell said. "Maybe his location was a little but off but I thought they hit some pretty good pitches."
