BOSTON (AP) -- Tom Glavine has been pitching like an All-Star.
Now he has the wins to prove it.
Glavine (9-5) won his second straight start -- after a string of
seven in which he was 0-4 -- and heads into the All-Star game after
leading the Atlanta Braves to a 5-3 victory Friday night over the
Boston Red Sox.

"I don't feel I was given anything" by being chosen by manager
Bobby Cox to the staff that will represent the NL in next Tuesday's
game in Atlanta, "but I certainly feel a lot better going there
with a 9-5 record instead of 8-6."
Glavine got the runs he needed in a five-run fifth in which
Andres Galarraga led off with a solo homer, his 20th, Andruw Jones
hit a two-run single and Chipper Jones had an RBI double.
"He's tough," Cox said of Glavine. "He should have 13 or 14
wins easy. He's pitched that good."
Glavine was 1-3 in his previous five starts, but allowed more
than two earned runs only once. On Friday, he allowed no runs and
four singles in the first seven innings before he and relievers
John Rocker and Kerry Ligtenberg ran into a bout of wildness that
contributed to Boston's three runs.
"It would be a lot easier if the bases weren't loaded when I
came in, but I have to throw strikes," said Ligtenberg, who walked
in a run before getting the last four outs for his seventh save in
eight opportunities.
Pete Schourek (2-8) didn't get out of the second inning as the
Braves kept hitting against left-handers and Schourek in
particular. They began the game with a major league best .325
batting average against lefties and went 7-for-11 against Schourek,
who is 2-9 with an 8.25 ERA against Atlanta.
"Schourek didn't have his fastball," Boston catcher Scott
Hatteberg said. "If he didn't have his changeup, it would have
been a lot worse."
The changeup was Glavine's best pitch as he left after giving up
six singles, three by Jose Offerman, in 7 2-3 innings as he won his
second straight start.
Glavine retired 12 straight batters between singles by Offerman
in the second and Morgan Burkhart in the sixth.
The Red Sox returned home on a roll, outscoring Minnesota 44-27
in a four-game sweep. But the Twins have the second-worst record in
the AL, while the Braves lead the NL East despite losing three of
four games to Montreal this week.
One big inning was all Atlanta needed with the way Glavine was
pitching. That came in the second.
Galarraga led off with his homer before Javy Lopez singled and
took third on Bobby Bonilla's double. Lopez scored on Reggie
Sanders' groundout. After Walt Weiss struck out, Quilvio Veras was
hit by a pitch. He and Bonilla moved up on the first of Schourek's
two wild pitches.
Andruw Jones then singled in two runs, and Chipper Jones made it
5-0 with a double to center. Schourek, 0-5 in his last 10 starts,
was replaced by Hipolito Pichardo.
The Red Sox rallied in the eighth with three runs. Nomar
Garciaparra drove in one run with a fielder's choice groundout
after Offerman and Jeff Frye singled. Glavine then loaded the bases
by walking Burkhart and hitting Bernard Gilkey with a pitch.
Rocker came in and walked Ed Sprague to force in a run.
Ligtenberg replaced Rocker and walked Brian Daubach to make it 5-3.
With the bases still loaded, Jason Varitek ended the threat with a
fly to center.
The Braves also escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first when
Glavine walked two batters and hit another.
"Glavine had his velocity up which keeps him more effective,"
Sprague said. "He got in trouble in the first inning because he
likes to pick and find out where the strike zone is."
Game notes
Several policemen stood near the first-base line as Rocker
took his warmup pitches. Others stood in front of the Braves dugout
as he went there after facing one batter. ... Atlanta 2B Veras left
the game with a bruised left forearm after being hit by a pitch in
the second. He scored but was replaced in the bottom of the inning
by Keith Lockhart. ... Glavine was 5-0 in his first seven starts,
2-5 in his next seven decisions. ... Boston is 3-7 in interleague
play. Atlanta is 5-5. ... Offerman extended his hitting streak to
12 games. ... The Braves are 17-2 when Galarraga homers and 6-1 in
their last seven games at Fenway Park.
