GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- It turns out that John Olerud beat the San
Diego Padres twice in the same at-bat.
In a wacky sequence, Olerud had an RBI double taken away by the
umps, then went back to the plate and launched a go-ahead,
three-run homer to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 7-5 win over the
Padres on Friday night. Olerud finished with five RBIs, matching
his career high, and two homers.
| | Mariners first baseman John Olerud watches the flight of his solo home run hit off Padres pitcher Steve Montgomery in the eighth inning Friday. The home run was Olerud's second of the night. |
With runners on first and second and one out in the sixth and
the Mariners trailing 2-1, Olerud doubled to left. But it turned
out that first base umpire Jim Wolf called time because a baseball
had come out into fair territory in right field near the Mariners'
bullpen. No relievers were warming up at the time.
Mariners manager Lou Piniella stormed out of the dugout and
angrily argued, but got nowhere as he stalked from ump to ump, his
cap in hand.
So the run came off the board, the runners went back to first
and second, and Olerud got his bat and went back to the plate. On a
1-0 pitch from Brian Meadows, Olerud drove the ball into the seats
in right for a 4-2 lead.
"I didn't see the ball. What was it, a beach ball?" Piniella
said. "But it turned out OK. I'm not complaining. Johnny had a big
night. He hit the ball well. We needed it."
Olerud said the first he knew something was up was when he saw
Piniella arguing. He asked shortstop Kevin Nicholson what was up,
and Nicholson said he thought time had been called.
Then crew chief Rocky Roe, working second base, told Olerud that
regardless if he'd popped up or gotten a base hit, the at-bat
wasn't going to count because time had been called.
"It's something that's never happened to me before," Olerud
said. "I didn't see him (Wolf) raise his arm. I had no idea what
happened. Nobody thinks it's going to wind up like that, where they
take something back and you get a better result. Now I'm saying, 'That was the right call.'"
Wolf was emphatic in making the home run call, running several
yards out into right field and circling his hand, as most of the
Mariners came off the bench to greet Olerud.
Roe said he heard Wolf call time as the pitch was leaving
Meadows' hand. "I knew that in my mind we'd have to bring it
back," Roe said.
Padres first baseman Ryan Klesko said he heard Wolf call time. Said Padres manager Bruce Bochy: "We got a break there but we
didn't take advantage of it."
Olerud drove in five runs for the second time in a week, tying
his career high. He drove in Seattle's first four runs, on a double
and the homer, then followed Mike Cameron's leadoff homer in the
eighth with a solo shot. Olerud and Cameron had three hits apiece.
Jamie Moyer (9-3) pitched six strong innings and improved to 5-0
in five starts following a Mariners loss this season. Seattle,
which leads the AL West, rebounded from Thursday's 2-1, 10-inning
loss to win for the seventh time in 11 games.
Pinch-hitter Dave Magadan led off the ninth with his first homer
in 158 at-bats, before Kazuhiro Sasaki got three outs for his 20th
save in 22 chances.
Cameron and Olerud homered off Steve Montgomery in the eighth,
and Joe Oliver had an RBI single. Olerud has 10 homers and Cameron
12. San Diego's Bret Boone hit a two-run homer in the eighth, his 17th.
Moyer allowed two runs and six hits, struck out six and walked
two. Meadows (7-7) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings,
struck out five and walked none.
Olerud hit an RBI double in the first, but the Padres tied it in
the second when Phil Nevin scored on shortstop Carlos Guillen's
error. It was Guillen's error on Thursday that allowed Nevin to
score from second with the winning run in the 10th inning of San
Diego's 2-1 victory. Guillen is starting in place of injured
All-Star Alex Rodriguez.
San Diego took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Eric Owens tripled
and scored on Ruben Rivera's infield single, a hard shot off
Guillen's glove with the infield in.
Game notes Rodriguez was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a
sprained right knee. The move was retroactive to July 8, so he'll
be eligible to be activated July 23. ... Leadoff hitter Rickey
Henderson didn't start after he was hit on the left elbow in
Thursday's loss. He was replaced in left field and in the order by
Stan Javier. ... Padres rookie Dusty Allen is 0-for-12 with five
strikeouts since being called up June 2. ... Olerud improved to
9-for-18 lifetime against Meadows, with two homers and four
doubles. ... Padres RHPs Brian Boehringer and Carlton Loewer will
both have season-ending surgeries to correct shoulder problems, but
neither procedure has been scheduled yet.
