ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Hideo Nomo became a much better pitcher after he was staked to a six-run first-inning lead. The Tigers' right-hander won for the first time since July 8, and Deivi Cruz keyed the six-run first with a two-run double as Detroit stopped the Texas Rangers' four-game winning streak, 10-2 Saturday night. "With a lead like that, you feel much more comfortable," Tigers manager Phil Garner said. "It was good for us and good for him too. He hasn't had much support lately. We've been wanting him to throw strikes earlier in the count. He threw a lot of strikes and then he got guys swinging." Nomo (4-10), who lost his previous three starts, allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings, struck out seven and walked two. "I felt a lot better about my fastball and got ahead of the hitters," Nomo said. "I had better control and better velocity." Former Rangers outfielder Juan Gonzalez went 3-for-4 for the Tigers, giving him 1,500 hits for his career. Wendell Magee was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help the Tigers stop a three-game losing streak. "We haven't been playing too well lately," Tigers catcher Brad Ausmus said. "It's better to end it sooner rather than later." Rafael Palmeiro hit his 389th career homer, tying him with Johnny Bench for 36th on the career list, one behind Graig Nettles. Kenny Rogers (10-8) had his shortest start of the season, giving up eight runs and nine hits in 2 2-3 innings. One day after the sixth anniversary of his perfect game, the first by an AL left-hander, Rogers was hurt by a pair of first-inning errors. Rogers made no excuses, however. "Today was a bad day all the way around," Rogers said. "I didn't think we played very well at all. I especially wasn't very good. We were on a roll. It would have been nice to keep it going." Dean Palmer's bases-loaded grounder drove in the first run when Texas third baseman Mike Lamb threw late to the plate. Magee followed with a two-run single, Cruz added his two-run double, and Shane Halter's RBI bunt single made it 6-0. Gonzalez had a second-inning RBI single. In the third, Cruz doubled and scored on a single by Hal Morris, who then got caught in a rundown between first and second. Cruz crossed the plate before Morris was tagged out, making it 8-0. Detroit went in front 10-0 in the fourth against Francisco Cordero on Magee's RBI single and Halter's sacrifice fly. Lamb's RBI single in the fifth ended Nomo's shutout bid, and Palmeiro led off the sixth with his 28th homer to make it 10-2. Game notesRangers C Ivan Rodriguez visited his teammates for the second straight night. Rodriguez had surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured right thumb and is out for the season. Rodriguez is wearing a soft cast and will be fitted for a splint next week. He will then be able to resume running and riding an exercise bike. The fracture is expected to heal in 6-10 weeks. ... Rogers lasted 2 2-3 innings in a start for the New York Mets last Sept. 25. ... Gabe Kapler of the Rangers extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games with a sixth-inning double. ... Ricky Ledee made his debut for the Rangers, coming in to play right field in the eighth. He flied to deep left in his only at-bat. ... Rookie B.J. Waszgis came in to catch in the eighth for the Rangers in his first major league appearance. He flied out in the ninth. ...
