SAN DIEGO (AP) -- First, Matt Clement felt relief to stay in San Diego despite many rumors. Next, he ended his three-game losing streak in his first outing after the trading deadline. Clement allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Wednesday night for their fourth straight victory. Eric Owens had three hits and scored twice as the Padres swept the three-game series and matched their longest winning streak of the season. The New York Yankees were said to be one of several teams interested in dealing for Clement before last Monday's waiver-free trading deadline passed. "Over the last five days, it seemed I didn't know what the heck was going on," Clement said. "I heard of teams I never dreamed would be mentioned with my name. Now I had this good start, so I can relax and go about my business." Clement (10-10) matched his win total from last year, when he went 10-12. He avoided losing four consecutive games for the first time in his two-year career. "Every time we had him on the ropes, he was able to make good pitches," the Phillies' Alex Arias said. "He focused when he needed to." Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 32 chances, coming off a blown save in his previous outing Tuesday. "I left the yard last time with a positive thought on my mind from (pitching coach) Dave Smith," Hoffman said. "I try not to take too many things home. Baseball should be left at the yard. My kids don't want a dad that's down in the dumps and they help pick me up in other ways." Omar Daal (2-12) fell to 0-2 in two starts since he was obtained with three others from Arizona for Curt Shilling on July 26. Daal, who dropped to 0-6 in his past eight starts, gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. "I felt pretty good out there," Daal said. "They didn't hit that well after the first inning. I thought, 'I've got to go out there and be more aggressive."' Clement worked past the fourth inning for the first time in three starts. In his two previous outings, he gave up 16 earned runs and 17 hits combined in seven innings. He credited his turnaround to bullpen work with Smith. "Sometimes when you have bad stuff you get into bad habits," Clement said. "Stupid stuff starts to form and you do stuff you're not used to doing. Smitty really helped me out a lot and pointed me in the right direction." The Padres, who let a 5-0 lead in the first inning slip away Tuesday, took a 3-0 edge in the first this time and stayed ahead the rest of the way. San Diego made it 5-2 in the seventh on Ruben Rivera's two-run double off Cliff Politte. Travis Lee later reached over the left-field fence to rob Bret Boone of a two-run homer. Owens had two infield singles in his fourth consecutive multihit game. Over that span, he's gone 10-for-19. In the first, Owens led off with a single and Phil Nevin walked with two outs. Joe Vitiello hit an RBI double and Wiki Gonzalez followed with a two-run single. Doug Glanville hit a two-out double and came home on Arias' single to cut Philadelphia's deficit to 3-2 in the seventh. Bobby Abreu then singled off Kevin Walker, but Heathcliff Slocumb struck out Scott Rolen to end the threat. The Phillies scored in the fourth on a RBI single by Travis Lee. Game notesThe Padres extended their working relationship with the Mexicali Aguilas of the Mexican Pacific League for the third consecutive year, covering the 2000-2001 winter season. Padres pitcher Mike Darr previously played in Mexicali. ... Phillies right-handed pitcher Paul Byrd underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, performed by Dr. Craig Morgan. Byrd is expected to miss the rest of the season. ... Right-handed pitcher Kent Bottenfield, acquired from Anaheim on Sunday, is scheduled his make his first Philadelphia start on Friday at Colorado. ...
