PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Matt Williams has regained his run-producing
stroke.

"He was the bus driver," Arizona's Luis Gonzalez shouted as
Williams, who drove in three runs, walked to his locker Monday
night after the Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.
"It's all right. I've been sitting in the backseat all year,"
Williams said.
Arizona remained one game behind San Francisco in the NL West.
The Giants beat the New York Mets 11-1.
"We check the scoreboard now that we're not in first place,"
said Randy Johnson, who allowed two runs -- one earned -- and five
hits in six innings. "When you're in first place, you don't check
it because you control your destiny."
Johnson had 10 of Arizona's 16 strikeouts but walked four. He is
winless in five starts.
"I don't think about that unless you guys bring it up," he
said. "If we win on a day I pitch, I did my job."
The game marked Curt Schilling's return to Philadelphia for the
first time since a five-player trade sent him to Arizona on July
26. But Schilling, the Phillies' former ace, isn't scheduled to
pitch in the series.
Arizona took the lead for good when Jay Bell led off the 11th
with a double off Jeff Brantley (1-7), took third on a groundout by
Gonzalez and scored on Williams' single.
Dan Plesac (2-0) pitched a perfect 10th, and Matt Mantei got his
10th save in 12 chances with a perfect 11th.
"Matt has really started to swing the bat well in the last week
for us," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said. "He means so much
to us, in the field, just his presence."
Williams, who missed the first 43 games with a fractured bone in
his foot, is 14-for-40 (.350) in his last nine games.
"The last couple games, I've been doing my job better,"
Williams said. "I haven't been doing it consistently."
Doug Glanville tied the game at 3 with a homer leading off the
seventh on the first pitch thrown by reliever Russ Springer.
Ed Vosberg and Vicente Padilla combined for four shutout innings
in relief. Vosberg didn't allow a hit in 2 2/3 innings. Padilla,
acquired in the Schilling deal, allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
After walking Glanville leading off the first, Johnson struck
out six consecutive batters. He also struck out the side in the
fourth.
"It was good to get him out of the game," Phillies manager
Terry Francona said. "We just didn't do the job against the other
pitchers."
The five-game winless streak is a season-high for Johnson, who
is stuck at 15 wins. It's the longest he has gone without a victory
since losing five straight starts last season, a stretch that
included four consecutive shutouts on a no-hitter, one-hitter,
two-hitter and three-hitter.
Arizona had taken a 3-2 lead with three, two-out runs in the
sixth off starter Kent Bottenfield.
After Jason Conti and Johnson struck out to start the inning,
Tony Womack tripled to center and Bell walked. Gonzalez cut it to
2-1 with a bloop single and Williams followed with a two-run
double.
Bottenfield, making his third start since coming to the Phillies
in a trade for Ron Gant on July 30, cruised until the sixth.
He allowed three runs, four hits and had eight strikeouts in six
innings.
Kevin Sefcik's RBI bouncer gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the
third.
Bottenfield reached on a fielder's choice, went to third as
Williams threw wildly on an infield single by Glanville and scored
on Sefcik's high chopper to short.
Glanville led off the fifth with his second infield single of
the game, stole second and scored on Scott Rolen's single to left
as the Phillies took a 2-0 lead.
Game notes
Johnson reached double digits in strikeouts for the 18th
time this season and 143rd time in his career. ... Rolen is
12-for-25 with six RBI in his last six games. ... Womack extended
his hitting streak to 11 games. ... Bottenfield was 3-0 against the
NL in four starts with Anaheim. ... RF Jason Conti made a running,
shoestring catch to rob Rolen of extra bases in the seventh. ...
Glanville reached base four times for the first time since May 24.
... Arizona recalled OF David Dellucci from Triple-A Tucson on
Monday to take the spot vacated when reliever Johnny Ruffin was
placed on the disabled list Sunday.
