RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO (AP) -- Carlos Delgado is making a case for MVP.

Delgado hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays an 8-6 win over the Anaheim Angels on Wednesday.

Fans chanted "MVP!" as he walked off the field.

Angels baserunner Adam Kennedy, right, slides home safely in the 8th inning of Wednesday's game.

"It's pretty flattering," said Delgado, who is hitting .360 with 35 homers and 110 RBI. "Hopefully I'll keep doing what I'm doing for the next six weeks, and we'll see what happens, but the bottom line is we have to win some games and make the playoffs."

The Blue Jays, who avoided falling to .500, moved within 6½ games of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East heading into Wednesday night. Toronto is in fifth place in the wild-card race.

"It was a must win," Toronto manager Jim Fregosi said. "We played poorly on the road, so you don't want to come back here and lose two in a row and fall back to .500."

Dave Martinez singled with one out in the ninth off Lou Pote (1-1). Delgado, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI, then hit a 3-2 pitch, giving Toronto the win.

"I left it up a little, and chances are he's not going to miss it," Pote said.

Billy Koch (6-2) pitched a perfect ninth to earn the victory.

Anaheim's Troy Glaus hit his 35th homer and Darin Erstad hit his 20th, raising his major league-leading hit total to 185.

The Angels blew a 5-3 lead in the seventh before tying the game at 6-6 in the eighth on catcher Darrin Fletcher's error.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the seventh on Delgado's RBI grounder off starter Scott Schoeneweis, and Tony Batista's two-run homer off Mark Petkovsek. Batista has 35 homers, including 17 in the seventh inning or later.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first on Delgado's RBI single, and Batista's run-scoring double.

"I played with Sammy Sosa for six years, and Delgado's like that," Toronto starter Steve Trachsel said. "You anticipate something exciting when he comes up."

Glaus homered for Anaheim in the second to make it 2-1, but Jose Cruz hit a solo shot in the third to tie it for Toronto.

Erstad homered in the fifth, and the Angels scored two runs in the sixth on Glaus' RBI single and Adam Kennedy's sacrifice fly.

Pinch-hitter Scott Spiezio's bloop RBI single in the seventh made it 5-3.

Game notes
Schoeneweis gave up five runs on six hits in 6 2-3 innings. ... Trachsel is winless in his last nine starts. He gave up four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. ... Toronto's Alex Gonzalez has hit in 14 straight games. ... The Angels are 2-10 in their last 12 games at SkyDome.
