ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Having two runners thrown out at home
didn't discourage the Cleveland Indians. At least they went for broke Sunday night.
Tim Salmon hit a tiebreaking homer in the fifth inning and the
Anaheim Angels held on for a 10-9 victory over the Indians.

After Cleveland rallied for five-runs in the seventh inning,
highlighted by Roberto Alomar's grand slam, Manny Ramirez was
thrown out trying to score from second on David Segui's single to
center.
"I felt we had to take a shot at it," Cleveland third-base
coach Jim Riggleman said. "My only concern was Manny's legs, but I
felt pretty good about that seeing the way he'd gone into second
(on his double)."
Garret Anderson's one-hop throw to catcher Bengie Molina beat
Ramirez, who spent six weeks on the DL with a strained hamstring
earlier this season, by 10 feet.
"A tremendous throw," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Salmon's 30th homer made Anaheim the first AL team to have four
players with at least that many.
"I've been hearing about it for the last week from the other
three guys," Salmon said. "There was a bit of pressure but,
with a month to go, we knew it would happen."
Salmon also had a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning.
Chuck Finley (10-10), the winningest pitcher in Angels history,
had his worst outing of the season in his first start in Anaheim as
a visiting player. The left-hander allowed season-highs of 11 hits
and eight runs in 5 1/3 innings.
He was chased in the sixth after giving up an RBI single to
Darin Erstad that made it 6-4. Salmon doubled off Justin Speier,
and Mo Vaughn followed with a two-run single to make it 10-4.
"I was relaxed and focused. It was exciting to be back, but I
put all the novelty aside," said Finley, who won 165 games for the
Angels before signing a three-year, $27 million deal with Cleveland
in the off-season.
"For about five starts now, things haven't been flowing
smoothly for me. I just haven't been pitching very well."
Kenny Lofton started Cleveland's seventh-inning rally, driving
in the first run with a sacrifice fly. After Mike Holtz walked
Vizquel to load the bases, Mark Petkovsek relieved and gave up
Alomar's 15th homer of the season and sixth career grand slam.
Al Leaven (3-4) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the victory, andShigetoshi Hasegawa got the last six outs for his eighth
save in 14 chances.
Angels starter Kent Mercker lasted only 3 2/3 innings. He
allowed four runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking
out one.
Vizquel's two-run homer, his seventh, and Segui's RBI
single gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the first.
The Angels took the lead with four runs in the third, the first
two on Troy Glaus' 37th homer, a 440-foot shot into the left-field
bleachers. Molina added a two-run single later in the inning to
make it 4-3.
The Indians tied it in the fourth when Vizquel walked with two
outs, stole second and scored on Alomar's double high off the
right-center field wall.
Game notes
Vaughn struck out once, increasing his total to move within
17 of Reggie Jackson's 1982 franchise record of 156. Glaus moved
within 12 of Bobby Knoop's 1966 team record of 144 by a
right-handed batter. ... The Angels have neither won nor lost more
than two straight since opening August with five consecutive
losses. ... Segui was thrown out in the first and third innings.
... Ramirez has hit in 11 straight games, going 17-for-36 (.487)
during the stretch. ... Salmon wound up hitting .515 (17-for-33)
with four homers and 11 RBI in nine games against Cleveland. ...
Vaughn (31) and Garret Anderson (31) are the other Anaheim players
with 30 homers, matching a feat accomplished in the NL six times by
three different teams.
