GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Chan Ho Park was in the kind of groove where
the opposing batters, the enemy fans and even the scoreboard didn't
matter.
Park allowed one hit in eight innings and Mark Grudzielanek
drove in four runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee
Brewers 7-2 Tuesday night for their eighth victory in nine games.
| | Chan Ho Park has been nothing short of dominant the past three weeks. He's 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA in his last five starts. |
Park (14-8) struck out a career-high 14 and only allowed James
Mouton's two-out, two-run homer in the sixth. With all four of his
pitches -- including a 95-mph fastball -- working in top form, Park
was so focused he didn't realize he had a no-hitter until shortly
before it disappeared.
"I didn't know until I saw the 0 on the scoreboard," Park
said. "After the home run, I forgot about the home run."
Park, who has 44 strikeouts and a 1.70 ERA while going 3-0 in
his last five starts, didn't allow a runner until first baseman
Eric Karros made an error on Mark Loretta's grounder in the fourth.
After walking pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney in the sixth, Park threw
a high 3-and-2 fastball that Mouton hit over the fence in the
left-field corner, snapping Park's streak of 20 2/3 consecutive
scoreless innings.
Park walked three and hit Richie Sexson, but was otherwise
dominant. Mike Fetters pitched the ninth to complete the
one-hitter.
"I don't think anybody has pitched that well and dominated a
game as thoroughly against us as he did tonight," Milwaukee
manager Davey Lopes said. "That guy looked like he was throwing
94-95 (mph). He threw some pitches that were literally
unhittable."
The Dodgers, winning while outfielder Gary Sheffield is
sidelined by a suspension and the flu, remained 2½ games behind
Arizona for second place in the NL West and moved to five games
behind division-leading San Francisco.
"That was probably as dominant as he has been all year," Los
Angeles manager Davey Johnson said. "We were looking for that kind
of performance last year. We're seeing it now. All his pitches are
sharp, and he's throwing all his pitches for strikes."
The Dodgers, who scored five runs in the first inning of their
5-3 victory Monday night, jumped on Jimmy Haynes (11-12) for
four runs in the second.
Backup catcher Chad Kreuter had an RBI single and Grudzielanek
had a two-run single in the rally. Los Angeles added two more in
the fourth when Haynes walked Park and Grudzielanek hit a two-run
double.
Grudzielanek, a Milwaukee native, also tripled in the ninth and
scored when Henry Blanco dropped a good relay throw from Ron
Belliard at the plate. It was scored a triple and an error.
"It felt good to get a big hit, because I haven't been doing
that all year," Grudzielanek said.
Haynes allowed four earned runs, five hits and three walks. The
Brewers, who fell to a season-worst 19 games below .500, lost for
the third time in four games.
Mouton's homer was just his second of the season. He hit leadoff
for the Brewers in place of slumping Marquis Grissom as Lopes
attempted to inject some vigor into his lifeless lineup.
"(Park) was tough, but you still believe you're going to get a
few hits off him," Mouton said. "We just needed one good inning,
but we didn't get it."
Game notes
Park struck out 12 on May 13 at St. Louis. ... Haynes threw
43 pitches in the second inning. ... Sheffield, who remained in Los
Angeles during the team's current road trip, has lost weight during
the illness and has little energy, Johnson said. ... Geoff Jenkins,
who was 7-for-11 with three homers against Park before the game,
struck out twice and grounded into a double play. ... Brewers 3B
Jose Hernandez had two hits in his first rehabilitation start at
Triple-A Indianapolis. Hernandez has been out since Aug. 10 with
back spasms.
