PHOENIX (AP) -- Once again, the Arizona Diamondbacks couldn't take advantage of a New York Mets' loss. Gary Sheffield drove in two runs with two doubles, and emergency starter Eric Gagne gave up one hit in six shutout innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers over Arizona 6-3 Monday. Arizona, which has lost five of seven, remained 4½ games behind the Mets, who lead the wild card race despite losing eight of 10. New York lost to Milwaukee 8-2. "Right now we can't be concerned with the Mets," Greg Colbrunn said. "We've just got to be concerned with ourselves. There's no mindset at all, Our mindset last year was win a ballgame, and this mindset is win a ballgame, so it's pretty much the same, I'd say." But manager Buck Showalter, criticized since his team began a gradual slide after a 26-10 start, acknowledged that the lost opportunity was bitter. "I don't know how you gauge the degree of frustration with it, but tomorrow we'll get another opportunity and try to take advantage of it," he said. Gagne (2-6), recalled from the minors earlier in the day, started because Ismael Valdes felt numbness in his right hand. Gagne struck out seven and walked four in his first major league appearance since July 27, winning for the first time in eight starts since June 6. "I worted on a lot of stuff, mechanics-wise," Gagne said of his time in Albuquerque. "How to step back from it, because I'm real aggressive -- sometimes too aggressive. Going down to Triple-A was real good for me, especially going for a month." Terry Adams pitched the seventh, allowing an RBI single to Kelly Stinnett, and Antonio Osuna, Mike Fetters and Jeff Shaw finished the six-hitter. Los Angeles has won two straight following a five-game losing streak, closing within two games of the Diamondbacks, who dropped 8½ games behind NL West-leading San Francisco. Armando Reynoso (10-11) gave up five runs, eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Sheffield hit an RBI double in the first and Tom Goodwin homered leading off a four-run fifth that included run-scoring doubles by Sheffield and Adrian Beltre around Shawn Green's RBI single. Arizona manager Buck Showalter had Todd Hundley intentionally walked, bringing up Beltre, who was in a 1-for-10 slide. "Usually he keeps you in the game," Mark Grudzielanek said of Reynoso. "He's tough for me. He was working in and out, and the umpire was giving him those strikes out there. But then he got behind a little bit, and I think that's where he got in trouble." Eric Karros's RBI single made it 6-1 in the ninth. "We swung the bats good," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "I mean, we've been hot and cold, but Shef got us on the board real quick, and that got things going." Jason Conti hit a two-run homer in the bottom half, his first major league home run. Game notesArizona's Luis Gonazlez caught a first-inning drive by Hundley against the left-field fence. ... Conti threw out Karros at third in the seventh from right trying to stretch a double into a triple. ... Along with Gagne, the Dodgers recalled IF Hiram Bocachica and LHP Jeff Williams from Albuquerque. ... The Diamondbacks are 6-13 since a season-best seven-game winning streak ended on Aug. 21. ...
