PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Montreal's Tony Armas has gone a long time between wins. Since his last victory on July 3 against Atlanta, Armas has lost three times and spent 51 days on the disabled list. But on Tuesday night, Armas (5-8) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, striking out three and walking two as the Expos blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0. "It was the best I've ever seen him. I hated to take him out of the game," Montreal manager Felipe Alou said. "He had good life on his fastball and all three of his pitches were outstanding." Philadelphia's Amaury Telemaco (1-1), making his first major league start since Sept. 26, 1998, also gave up only two hits, struck out six and walked three in eight innings. "The way the pitchers were throwing we could've been out there a long time," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "(Telemaco) made just one mistake and it cost him the game," he said, referring to Jose Vidro's homer in the eighth inning. "We've been getting good pitching, but not getting much to show for it." Armas allowed just two Phillies to reach second base. Guillermo Mota pitched a scoreless eighth and Scott Strickland worked a one-hit ninth for his sixth save, completing the three-hitter and Montreal's sixth shutout of the season. Leading off the eighth, Vidro hit a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his 23rd homer of the season. The Expos' leadoff batters reached base in each of the first three innings, but could not capitalize as the Phillies turned two double plays. "There weren't very many opportunities for either team, both teams must've been tired," Alou said referring to Monday's doubleheader between the two teams. Andy Tracy doubled with one out in the fourth, but was thrown out at third trying to advance on a pop-up to first. Travis Lee reached into the stands to make the catch and threw Tracy out while leaning against the railing. The Phillies were able to get just two runners past first base. Tomas Perez doubled in the third and Pat Burrell reached second on Armas' wild pitch. "It's good to be back," said Armas, who made his second start since coming off the DL. "Thank God everything is all right and I feel good." Game notesFour of the eight starting Phillies fielders on Tuesday, including Marlon Anderson, Burrell, Gary Bennett and Perez, began the season at Triple-A Scranton. Telemaco spent most of the season at Triple-A .... This was the seventh time the Phillies were shut out this season. ... The loss, coupled with a Cubs win, gave the Phillies the worst record in baseball. ... Outfielder Bobby Abreu, the teams best hitter (.316) did not play due to a sore right elbow. He is expected to return Friday against the Florida Marlins. ... Vidro's homer was his fourth against the Phillies this season. ... Tuesday's game was played in 2 hours, 16 minutes, the second fastest game at the Vet this season. The first game of Monday's doubleheader was the quickest. ... RHP Trey Moore, The Expos scheduled starter Wednesday, was scratched due to stiffness in his pitching arm.
