Green scores winner on wild pitch

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chan Ho Park picked up where ace Kevin Brown left off.

Park
Dodgers pitcher Chan Ho Park has not recorded a shutout in 140 major-league starts.
Park allowed two hits and struck out 13 over eight innings and Shawn Green scored on a wild pitch as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres on Sunday for their third 1-0 victory in five games.

"Chan Ho has definitely elevated his game a little bit," teammate Jeff Shaw said after Park won for the seventh time in nine decisions. "He's been going like 1 2/3 innings deeper into the ballgame to help our bullpen out, and he's been doing an outstanding job."

Park (17-10), who retired 12 of his last 13 batters, is still looking for his first shutout after 140 major-league starts.

The Padres' offense totaled one run, four hits and 26 strikeouts in the last two games against Park and Brown, who are the first pair of Dodgers to record at least 200 strikeouts in the same season since Don Sutton and Bill Singer in 1969.

"They're two of the best pitchers in the league -- and it's unfortunate, because we had two guys going for us who did a heck of a job," Padres catcher Ben Davis said, referring to Woody Williams and Matt Clement, who alowed one run and three hits over seven innings and struck out seven.

Shaw got three outs for his 27th save in 34 chances. Tom Goodwin made a diving catch on Ed Sprague's blooper to center and threw to first to double up Ryan Klesko to end the game.

Shaw, whose season has been hampered by tendinitis in his left elbow, has converted all 14 save opportunities since coming off the disabled list after the All-Star break.

"It's really been a good run," he said. "Some of the bad luck I had in the first half of the season hasn't been happening in the second half. I've been making better pitches and staying healthy, and that's all it boils down to."

Despite their eighth victory in nine games, Los Angeles will be eliminated from the NL wild-card race with one more loss or a Mets win. Both teams are off Monday.

Green singled with one out in the fourth off Matt Clement (13-16) and moved to third on a double by Adrian Beltre. Clement loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Chris Donnels. After striking out Bruce Aven, Clement threw his club-record 23rd wild pitch of the year, scoring Green.

"I called for a sinker away, and he just cut it across his body. It was a tough one to handle," Davis said. "But Matt pitched well. He was able to use both sides of the plate, used all three of his pitches and was basically getting ahead of guys. Even when he was falling behind, he was making quality pitches to get them out."

Ruben Rivera led off the fifth with a triple, but the Padres couldn't cash it in. Greg La Rocca grounded out to third, Clement looked at a called third strike after his suicide squeeze bunt dribbled foul, and Damian Jackson struck out.

"When he gets challenges and bows his neck, there's no better pitcher in baseball," Johnson said. "Even if a guy gets on third, if he makes his pitches, they've got no chance to score."

The Padres also got a runner to third base with no outs in the fourth. John Mabry, who singled after a leadoff walk to Klesko, tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt and was thrown out by Chad Kreuter. After a walk to Ed Sprague, Park caught Ben Davis' line drive and trapped Sprague off first base for the inning-ending double play.

Clement allowed one run and three hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
