NEW YORK -- Boston reliever Ugueth Urbina was picked Wednesday to replace teammate Pedro Martinez on the American League roster for next week's All-Star Game.
Urbina, 28, has 21 saves, and also has a 2.70 ERA and an 0-3 record.
It will be his second All-Star appearance. He was on the 1998 NL All-Star team when he was with Montreal.
''Anybody feels special,'' Urbina said at Fenway Park before his team's game against Toronto. ''A lot of people have the numbers to be an All-Star but they're out. It's an honor.''
He'll certainly have enough familiar faces in Milwaukee with him next Tuesday. Boston will have six players on the All-Star team for the first time since 1979.
Urbina will join 3B Shea Hillenbrand, OF Manny Ramirez, SS Nomar Garciaparra, OF Johnny Damon and pitcher Derek Lowe.
''I think its going to be real fun to do it with all the teammates there,'' Urbina said. ''It's good to be with a few guys from your team. It's going to be exciting.''
Martinez was selected for the original AL roster but declined for personal reasons. |
