| MONTREAL -- The Padres said that outfielder Tony Gwynn is in the lineup for Friday night's game against the Montreal Expos.

Gwynn has missed San Diego's last two games with a bruised right elbow suffered after he was hit by the Mets Al Leiter on Monday at Shea Stadium.
Gwynn and the Padres received good news Wednesday when X-rays were negative, meaning the bone wasn't broken and he wouldn't be headed to the disabled list. Gwynn had feared a broken bone after being hit by Leiter's pitch.
Eric Owens started in Gwynn's place in right field for the second straight game Thursday.
Gwynn, 18th on the career hits list with 3,067, made two trips to the disabled list last year because of a strained calf and
missed 44 games.
"To me, my only goal this year was to stay healthy," Gwynn, who turns 40 on May 9, said earlier this week. "To work so hard in the winter and
then get hit on opening day, that's one thing. To have them tell
you it's cracked, chipped, whatever, it just sucks all the air out
of you. I was just so bummed." | |
