NEW YORK -- Red Sox reliever Bryce Florie, at home recovering from a line drive to the face, is expected to return to the hospital in a day or two for further evaluation. Florie was released from the hospital Sunday and called his Boston teammates in the clubhouse as they prepared for a road trip with stops in New York, Cleveland and Detroit.
"He's OK, spirit-wise," Red Sox reliever Rod Beck said before Monday night's game against New York. "He did say it was painful to talk." Florie was struck by Ryan Thompson's liner in the ninth inning Friday night at Fenway Park. The next day, he underwent surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary to release pressure on his right eye and assess the damage. "Prognosis for reasonable vision is guarded," team physician Dr. Bill Morgan said at the time. Monday night, Boston starter Rolando Arrojo was hit in the right hip by line drive. Arrojo was OK after being hit by Jorge Posada in the second inning. He stayed in the game after a couple of warmup pitches. Red Sox manager Jimy Williams and trainer Jim Rowe rushed from the dugout after the liner glanced off Arrojo's body and went into center field for a single. Arrojo tried to catch the ball, and the impact knocked off his glove. Florie has three fractures around the eye socket that will require surgery. He will be examined either Tuesday or Wednesday at the hospital to determine when that operation can take place. Doctors hope to perform that operation in the next two weeks. "We're just waiting for more updates," said general manager Dan Duquette, who spoke to Florie on Monday at his home in the Boston area. "It's in God's hands." Florie's father was in town from South Carolina to watch Friday night's game. The pitcher's mother arrived a day after the accident. Florie was 0-4 with one save and a 4.56 ERA. The right-hander made 29 appearances this season, all in relief.
