Opened the season as Chicago's center fielder, but struggled and was sent to Vancouver (AAA) in mid-May ... Recalled to the Sox in September and recorded his first career four-hit game Sept. 19 at Texas ... Traded by St. Louis with pitcher Rick Horton to Chicago for pitcher Jose DeLeon Feb. 9, 1988.

Made his major league debut for St. Louis July 10 against San Francisco but returned to Louisville (AAA) eight days later ... Was recalled again Aug. 21 and spent the rest of the season in the big leagues ... Recorded his first major league hit Aub. 23 at Cincinnati in front of his hometown family and friends ... Made one appearance in the NL Championship Series against the Giants and became the first pinch runner to steal a base in NLCS history ... Also stole a base in his only World Series appearance, a Game 5 pinch-running assignment for catcher Tony Pena.
