CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds, shorthanded after injuries to center fielder Billy Hamilton and second baseman Brandon Phillips, promoted infielder Kris Negron from Triple-A Louisville before Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Cincinnati optioned right-hander Carlos Contreras to Louisville to make room on the 25-man roster for Negron. Louisville RHP Brett Marshall was designated for assignment to make room for Negron on the 40-man roster. Hamilton flied out in his last at-bat of the Reds' 4-1 victory against the Cubs and left the game because his left hamstring was tight. He expects to miss a few games. "It's been bothering me for the past couple of days," Hamilton said. "I knew something was happening. On the last at-bat, I stepped down and I felt it pull when I started running." Phillips, who suffered the injury while making a sliding catch in the eighth inning, wore a splint as he left the clubhouse. X-rays were negative. Negron hit .269 with three home runs in more than 75 games with the Bats. In his only previous major league experience, he was 1-for-4 over four games with Cincinnati in 2012. Contreras allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings over three games since being promoted from Double-A Pensacola on June 21. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
