Tigers place Daniel Norris, Anibal Sanchez on DL; acquire Randy Wolf

MLB, Detroit Tigers

DETROIT -- The Tigers' starting rotation continues to get hammered by injuries, as the team announced it has placed both Daniel Norris and Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list.

Norris was expected to head to the DL after straining his right oblique muscle in Wednesday's 15-8 win against the Chicago Cubs. The news about Sanchez, though, was unexpected, as the team revealed he has a strained right rotator cuff.

Shortly after the move, the Tigers announced they had acquired left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations in a minor league deal. The Tigers also called up relievers Guido Knudson and Jose Valdez from Triple-A Toledo.

According to the Tigers, Wolf will pitch Saturday.

"Can't cry over spilled milk," Ausmus said of the injuries in his pregame availability on Thursday. "Just keep moving forward."

Ausmus said there was some concern about a dip in velocity during Sanchez's last start, but he wasn't aware of any of any particular issue. Sanchez (10-10, 4.99 ERA) became increasingly concerned after his last start because of some soreness in his elbow, which he feared was from compensating for the shoulder issue. After an initial diagnosis, however, the team isn't concerned this will be a lengthy absence for Sanchez.

"We don't think it will be anything more than a regular 15-day DL stint," Ausmus said.

Norris, who allowed three runs on four hits in 4⅓ innings pitched, exited Wednesday's game in the fifth inning while in apparent discomfort, grabbing his right side.

Before his departure, the 22-year-old Norris (2-2, 4.43) hit a home run to center field in his first plate appearance, becoming the first pitcher to hit a home run in his first at-bat since Tommy Milone in 2011.

The Tigers are awaiting further test results and did not have an immediate timeline on Norris, though Ausmus said it would probably be a "minimum of two weeks, could be longer."

After the game, Norris told reporters he wished he could have remained in the game and sounded disappointed about a potential DL stint.

"It's pretty frustrating," Norris told reporters. "I wanted to stay in the game and get deeper in the game for my team."
