Phillies rookie Daniel Stumpf suspended 80 games for PEDs

Philadelphia Phillies rookie left-hander Daniel Stumpf was suspended 80 games Thursday for violating Major League Baseball's policy against performance-enhancing drugs.

Stumpf tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, MLB said. Stumpf's suspension is effective immediately.

He will lose $221,858 of salary under his contract, which calls for him to be paid at the rate of the minimum $507,500 while in the major leagues and at the rate of $41,400 while in the minors.

The Phillies said in a statement they were "disappointed to hear today's news of Daniel's violation."

Stumpf became the fifth player suspended this year under the big league drug program. New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia received a permanent ban following a third positive PEDs test, and Cleveland outfielder Abraham Almonte, Cincinnati outfielder Juan Duran and free-agent catcher Taylor Teagarden were suspended 80 games each.

Stumpf, 25, had appeared in three games this season for the Phillies, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

He was a Rule 5 draft pick from the Kansas City Royals organization this offseason.

The Phillies recalled left-hander Elvis Araujo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Stumpf on the major league roster. Araujo was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 40 games for the Phillies last season.
