Indians send struggling Cody Anderson to minors

MLB, Cleveland Indians

CLEVELAND -- The Indians could not wait for Cody Anderson to straighten out his problems in the big leagues.

Cleveland optioned the struggling right-hander to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, one day after he had another rough outing.

Anderson allowed six runs, including two homers, over 4 1/3 innings in Monday's series opener against Cincinnati. The Indians rallied for a 15-6 win that left Anderson 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA in six starts.

"Guys have gone back to Triple-A," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "That doesn't change one iota how we feel about this kid. When you look at a kid and you feel he needs to go back for his own good, you need to do it."

Anderson has also given up 10 homers in 32 2/3 innings. While going 7-3 last season, he allowed nine home runs in 91 1/3 innings.

"He's going to be a huge part of what we do for a long time, it's kind of a struggle right now for him," Francona said.

Cleveland will start Mike Clevinger on Wednesday against the Reds in Cincinnati. It will be the major league debut for Clevinger, who has a 3.03 ERA in seven starts for the Clippers.

The team also activated starting right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall from the bereavement list and he was batting seventh against the Reds on Tuesday. Chisenhall is hitting .255 with no homers and three RBI in 17 games this season.

Clevinger, a 25-year-old right-hander received news of the promotion on Monday night from Columbus manager Chris Tremie.

"I really didn't have much to say," Clevinger said. "Five minutes later he called me again and said, 'Clev, I just wanted to make sure you heard me, you're going to the big leagues.' I didn't sleep at all. I had the shakes at about 5.a.m. They're still going."

Clevinger became a father a couple of weeks ago and will make his debut in front of several family members.

"If you had asked me this last year, I never saw any of these two things coming," he said.
